At part of Sustainable Development Week, Hatch employees volunteer their time to help clean up their local communities The main objective is to develop a clear understanding of the impact our operations have on climate change and what areas we can target for the greatest emissions abatement. Strategies can then be devised to minimize our impact through improved office practices, project management strategies, and sensible air travel. The footprint will use standardized approaches to data collection and emissions calculations, and will include emissions from travel (road, air), paper use, water use, office energy consumption (heating, electricity), and other relevant emission sources. The Environmental Services Group will work closely with other Hatch business groups to develop automated systems and procedures to update the inventory on an ongoing basis. Many Hatch offices also have initiatives to reduce employee-generated GHG emissions generated through workplace commuting. For example, Hatch Mississauga has an online “Smart Commute” program to encourage carpooling, and provides incentives (monetary and preferred parking) for carpoolers. The CO 2 savings from this program are quantified every month and circulated internally. We have also established a work sharing program that enables us to access expertise across the company who may not necessarily be located in the region of the project, which enables us to bring our full breadth of experience to each project while at the same time reduce employee travel requirements and related GHG emissions. In addition, we continue to implement IT solutions where possible as a method of offsetting employee travel and subsequent GHG emissions. Waste We understand our offices impact our communities. we generate through the daily operations of our business locations. Green Office Teams in major offices continually work to provide programs and services to reduce, recycle and reuse the waste generated by our offices. To facilitate the reduction of waste, we provide in-office recycling programs where possible. Water Water is a precious resource and we are working to implement water savings plans and practices across Hatch offices. Conservation is the most important step in lowering our water consumption. Many Hatch offices have standard features such as dual-low flush toilets, motion sensor activated taps, and smart irrigation systems. We continue to implement solutions where possible. An important step towards better understanding our water usage is to track it. We have upgraded some facility water meters to facilitate better tracking and contracted third-party monitoring where needed. Green Office Teams Green Office Teams, comprised of concerned employees wanting to lessen Hatch’s impacts on the environment, have been established in each of our major offices. The Green Office Teams are self-organized by volunteers who are dedicated leaders within their offices, and are responsible for implementing many initiatives to raise awareness within Hatch. Sustainable Development Week Hatch annually observes a Sustainable Development Week globally by designating the week of Earth Day to organize events in each major office. The goal of SD Week is to raise awareness about sustainable development principles and to encourage behavior, both at home and at work, that reduces the harmful effects of unsustainable practices on us and on our planet. SD Week 2010 was focused on raising awareness on social impact management. Each office hosted guest speakers that presented on a wide range of topics: InterfaceFLOR’s journey towards sustainability; global warming from a Grade 2 student’s perspective; Hatch’s disaster relief efforts in Haiti; social impact in the mining industry; ethical farming; community impacts of wind farming; and sustainable investing. Social events featured eco and hybrid car displays, fair trade food, organic beer and wine tasting, sustainability quiz nights, local neighborhood clean ups, and the presentation of internal recognition awards. Putting it into Practice: Focus on Hatch Wollongong Hatch’s Wollongong office is a flagship project that sets an example for the future of building development and illustrates how landlords and tenants can work together to maximize benefits for both parties as well as the environment. The design of the office reduces the ecological footprint and operating costs, fosters innovation and improves communication. Some of the defining features of this new office include: Reduced Energy Consumption: • More than $4,000 per year on electricity costs are saved by installing a double glazed building façade • Installation of a solar hot water system reduces energy consumption by 50% • 17,400 kWh of electricity saved by choosing metal-backed reflective blinds • Low energy lighting fixtures controlled by occupancy detectors and photo sensors in Hatch meeting rooms save more than 4.5 tonnes CO 2 e emissions and $750 per year 29
