Expert advice from <strong>Dr</strong> Stuart Tiller: Mr D<br />

“Thank you for the request that I provide clinical advice in relation to specific<br />

questions posed regarding the care provided to [Mr D] by [<strong>Dr</strong> E] of the <strong>New</strong><br />

<strong>Zeal<strong>and</strong></strong> Men’s <strong>Clinic</strong>.<br />

Advice requested.<br />

• General advice on the st<strong>and</strong>ard of care provided.<br />

• Specific advice on the st<strong>and</strong>ard of the clinical assessment/examination<br />

performed.<br />

• Specific advice on the clinical treatment prescribed <strong>and</strong>/or dispensed.<br />

• Whether any professional st<strong>and</strong>ards apply, <strong>and</strong> whether these st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

were complied with.<br />

• Any other comment.<br />

The complaint.<br />

The complaint has been prepared with the assistance of a <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Disability<br />

advocate.<br />

[Mr D] has complained regarding the cost of his treatment, the manner in which he<br />

was required to pay a large sum of money <strong>and</strong> the ineffectiveness of the treatment<br />

provided.<br />

[Mr D] consulted with a doctor for about 30 minutes. At no time was cost of the<br />

proposed treatment mentioned.<br />

At the reception desk he felt pressured to pay $710 immediately without time for<br />

reflection or discussion with his wife who was outside the clinic. Given the<br />

sensitive nature of his consultation he felt unable to dispute the dem<strong>and</strong> for such a<br />

sum of money. He felt ‘bullied into paying’.<br />

He believes that he was not given adequate prior information or time to consent to<br />

the proposed treatment <strong>and</strong> accept the expense involved.<br />

The clinical records.<br />

The ‘Initial consultation’ consent form has been signed by [Mr D].<br />

The ‘Injectable treatments’ consent form has been signed by [Mr D].<br />
