Parent Desires
'
Parents in the county with children in center programs want supervised care
in a safe, structured environment; competent, trained, patieni, caring, and
respectful staffwith minimum turnover; and program activities that rõpre
sent an informal extension of school coupled with an additional emphasis on
recreational and social activities. Generally, nonschool-hour center-based
programs in the county provided these services, but not always to the
extent parents desired. specifically, parents vaìued prograrrs that offered:

Academic support activities,
including checking to see what hontework
was assigned, encouraging or
insisting that homework be done,
checking to see that homework is
done correctly, providing tutodng
to assist students who may need
academic help, and offering training
and access to computers. While most
progratns said they provided such
¿rctivities, parenl.s, especially lowincome
parent.s, felt the neecl for
l.ìlore aggressive, comprehensive
services in this area than their
children were currently receiving.
