on why this species is so abundant on Texas jetties by addressing information voids
on growth rates of other blenny species; physiological tolerances and requirements;
and interactions between S. cristata and other constituent species.
• Texas jetties represent a convergence of at least two genetically distinct populations
of Scartella cristata. The local population of S. cristata at Galveston had close ties
with Florida indicating its origins lie in the eastern Gulf. Port Aransas and South
Padre Island do not share this affinity with Florida. These local populations were
closely related to each other suggesting a source population in the southern Gulf or
Caribbean. Future work should include samples from a wider geographical range
and incorporate investigations into cohort effects on the genetic structure of local
populations.
