<strong>Foundation</strong> decided that retained ownership was essential to the preservation<br />

of the property and has maintained its residential use by renting it to<br />

private tenants.<br />

In 1994, a major rehabilitation of the property was undertaken<br />

under the direction ofHSFF board member Donna Quasthoff,AIA. Work<br />

included electrical upgrading, fireplace rehabilitation, exterior stucco repair,<br />

interior and exterior painting, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, and<br />

various miscellaneous repairs such as rebuilding the window unit on the<br />

east wall to the right ofthe<br />

front door.<br />

Although the Barrio de Anal co has been compromised by encroachments<br />

of state government and by changes wrought during the federal<br />

Urban Renewal program, this portion of De Vargas Street retains its<br />

Hispanic residential character with<br />

houses lying close to a narrow,<br />

curved street that leads to the<br />

Chapel of San Miguel, where a<br />

mission church has served the barrio<br />

since early Spanish-Colonial<br />

times.<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Fe</strong> structures<br />

for<br />
