Lopez and Sandoval owned the property from the mid 1860s to<br />
the mid 1880s. It has recently been learned through studying the history of<br />
the Candalario store on San Francisco<br />
Street that Lopez was the<br />
son ofDamaso<br />
Lopes. A native of<br />
Spain, the elder Lopes was a mining<br />
expert and a trader. At his death<br />
in 1851, his son Francisco and<br />
three siblings inherited interests in<br />
several valuable tracts on San<br />
Francisco Street (including the<br />
eventual Candelario property) and<br />
on the west side ofthe Plaza. Francisco<br />
Lopez was a miller and may<br />
have had a mill on the De Vargas<br />

In 1874 Figenia and Francisco sold two rooms at the southwest<br />
comer of the tract to Cresencia Dias for $50. Dias and Lopez sold these<br />
two rooms in September 1876 to <strong>Fe</strong>liciana Quintana de Blumner, who<br />
had used an inheritance from her father to purchase the adjoining tract on<br />
the west the preceding <strong>Fe</strong>bruary. Quintana's husband, Charles Blumner,<br />
had died the preceding June.<br />
In 1885 Francisco Lopez and Figenia Sandoval transferred the<br />
property (minus the previously sold two rooms) for $1,100 to Ludlena<br />
Thomson. Thomson was divorced from John Thomson four years later.<br />
At some point after 1890 the property was transferred to Harry L. and<br />
Lucy M. Waldo.5 Judge Waldo (1844-1915) was an influential New<br />
Mexico lawyer as well as former New Mexico attorney general and chief<br />
justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. At the time he purchased this<br />
