Medea
By Euripides
February 23-24, 7:30 PM
February 25, 2:00 & 7:30 PM
MCA Zurcher Auditorium
Tragedy plays out on the main stage
as HUTC presents this classic Greek
tale of passion, jealousy and revenge.
Scorned and humiliated by her
unfaithful and politically motivated
husband, Medea is exiled from her
home on orders by the King. Medea
pleads with King Kreon to allow her
to stay for just one more day. Once
permission is granted, she hatches
one of the most shocking plans to
unleash unimaginable horror upon
those who have wronged her. Content Advisory: This play
contains some violent images and mature subject matter that
is not appropriate for young children.
Written by Larry Shue
April 24-27, 7:30 PM
April 28, 2:00 & 7:30 PM
MCA Studio Theatre
Winner of two Obie Awards and two
Outer Critics Circle Awards, this gem
of a play is certain to cause sidesplitting
laughter. The reclusively
shy Charlie leaves England and
reluctantly accompanies his friend,
Froggy, on a trip to a fishing lodge set
in rural Georgia. Once there, Froggy
informs the locals that Charlie is from
an exotic country and speaks no
English so that Charlie may be spared
the embarrassment of making idle
conversation. However, the plan backfires as the locals quickly
begin to confide secrets to Charlie that challenge his ability to
remain silent. “A constant invitation to relax and laugh at the
foolishness of life” remarks The Village Voice. You won’t want to
miss this uproarious comedy!
African American Studies, at Earlham
College. His book, Good Punishment?
Christian Moral Practice and U.S. Imprisonment (Eerdmans, 2008)
discussion on the nature and purpose of incarceration. His
presentation will address issues raised in his book and identify
ways that people of faith can enrich their spiritual lives through
reflection on the subject of restorative justice.
Christina Van Dyke
“I’ll Have a Salad and a Diet Coke: Eating as a
Gendered Act”
March 22, 7:00 PM
MCA Zurcher Auditorium
Christina Van Dyke is associate professor of
Philosophy and Director of Gender Studies
at Calvin College. She has co-edited The
Cambridge History of Medieval Philosophy
and serves as Executive Director for the
Society of Christian Philosophers. Her
presentation will discuss the cultural
constructions of male and female appetites,
and the cultural myths surrounding eating
and dieting, which are particularly damaging to women. She
portrays the Christian diet industry as complicit in creating an
unhealthy understanding of food and nutrition in American public
life, and shows how resources in the Christian tradition can help
improve our thinking about eating and the human body.
leader in the Portland Chinese community. His correspondence
