Claim First
Track Victory
On a day that was overcast
and gloomy, Huntington College
scored its first track victory
in school history. Warsaw
was the place where the Foresters
outpointed their Mid-
Central conference rivals on
May 12. Grace, Indiana Tech,
Concordia, and the help of
outsider Goshen could not
match the boys from College
Park.
Huntington scored 77½
points to the 70 points for
Grace. In two previous meets
the Grace team beat Huntington.
Goshen came in third with
66 points, Concordia had 27
and Indiana Tech had only
25½ points.
Rollo Williams, undefeated
so far this year, won both
hurdle races. His time of 15.4
seconds in the 120 yard low
hurdle race was a new record
for Huntington College. Garl
Wetters of Huntington picked
up a blue ribbon in the shot
put and John Hicks won the
high jump. The Huntington
team won the meet on the
strength of the seconds and
thirds that were awarded it. In
sixteen events Huntington took
five firsts, five seconds, four
thirds, and four fourths.
Both relays were won by
Huntington. The 20 points
gained there made the difference
in the final score.
ISEA
Convention
On Saturday, May 5, Dr.
Lange, Pam Gamble, and Sharon
Cox attended the Indiana
Student Education Association
Convention at Ball State Teachers'
College.
After registration, a business
session, consisting of the election
of new officers, was held.
Those present were then dismissed
to attend various discussion
groups.
Following lunch, Mr. Ewald
Turner, NEA president, was
guest speaker. He presented
three responsibilities teachers
have: to know, to tell and to
do.
The installation of ISEA and
IFTA officers followed.
Young
Republicans
The Young Republicans Club
held a meeting on Thursday,
May 3, at 7:30 p.m.
The business consisted of
the election of officers for the
coming year. Those elected
were: Steve Smith, president;
John Holloway, vice president,
Norma Deemer, recording
secretary, Nancy Altman, corresponding
secretary; Larry
McIntyre, treasurer; Naomi
Wolfe, program chairman;
Sharon Cox, publicity chairman;
and Judy Griffin, membership
chairman.
Nancy Altman gave a report
of the Midwest Confederation
Convention held at Indianapolis
on April 13 and 14.
The new president adjourned
the meeting.
How's That Again?
At a recent meeting of the
Freshman Class, Roger Skinner
was elected president for
the coming year. To serve
with him the group named
Roger Skinner as vice president.
After that, they all
went off and soaked their
heads for a while.
After careful consideration
of the problem (the existence
of which some kind soul pointed
out), they decided that it
might be well to name another
vice president, just in case
both president and vice president,
were (or should that be
was?) absent from their (his)
official duties.
Now you've got us confused!
Do let us know how it all
turns out, won't you?
Huntington Humbles Taylor
Thursday, May 17, will be
a day long remembered by
Forrester baseball coach Ray
Zimmerman. That was the
day he and his team invaded
Upland, Indiana, to challenge
the highly touted Taylor Trojans.
Huntington took an early
2 - 0 advantage, but Taylor
took the lead with a big 4-run
fourth inning and held it until
the top of the eighth when
Sophomore second - baseman
Dick Moyer doubled home the
tying and winning runs. Gene
Benner and winning pitcher
Bob Andrews had walked to
open the eighth and Jim Stonebraker
advanced them with a
sacrifice before Moyer's big
Foresters
Chop Down
Manchester
The baseball season got off
to a roaring start as the Foresters
chopped down Manchester
College in both ends of a twinbill.
Huntington scored 3
runs in the first inning and
led all the way in the first
game that ended 10 - 6 in
favor of Huntington.
Right-hander Terry McAfee
started on the mound for the
Woodsmen and hurled two
strong innings, allowing no
runs and just two hits. Bob
Hostler and Bob Briggs followed
him on the hill.
Sam Kreigh, Forrester backstop,
led the attack for the
home team with 3 singles.
Shortstop Lowell Smith collected
a triple and a single along
with a base on balls. Gene Benner,
sophomore first socker,
drove in 4 runs with 2 hits and
a sacrifice fly.
Manchester had at least one
base - runner in every inning
but had only one big inning,
the fifth, in which they chased
three men across the plate.
The second game was close
all the way, but Huntington
held on for a 5 - 4 victory.
Keller started for Huntington
and Andrews relieved him in
the fourth inning.
blow.
Glen Fahrnow was also a
standout for the Woodsmen
as he notched 4 hits including
a first inning double. Andrews
went the distance on the
mound for Huntington and
pitched a fine game, being in
serious trouble only in the
fourth when the Trojans touched
him for five of their nine
hits. He struck out five and
walked three on the way to
his third victory without a
loss.
The win was Huntington's
seventh of the season in nine
games.
Defeats Grace
Huntington opened league
play in a big way as they roasted
Grace College at Forest
Glen Park. When the smoke
had cleared, Huntington had
won by a score of 20 - 1.
Kreigh, with three singles, and
Smith, with two round - trippers,
led the twelve hit attack
against a porous Grace defense.
Terry McAfee and Mark
Crain on the hill won the second
game of the year for the
Woodsmen. McAfee gave up
Grace's lone run and two hits
in the first four innings, while
Crain held the opposition
scoreless on five hits for the
remainder of the game.
After the first three games,
Huntington's leading hitters
are Benner - .667; Kreigh -
.583; Smith - .455; Mastin -
.445.
