Transformer Training
L.U. 70 (lctt&o), WASHINGTON,
DC—On July 22 and 24 a transformer
training class was held at the hall. The
American Line Builders Joint Apprenticeship
and Training Program (ALBAT)
provided an instructor and a functioning
line and transformer mock-up for
hands-on training. Instructor Melvin
Crowe taught the eight-hour class.
Members who took the class said it was
very informative and they learned a lot.
Riggs Distler held a Safety Celebration
at its Crofton and White Marsh
yards. Riggs Distler gave away tools,
gift cards and two 50-inch plasma
TVs. TV winners were Mike Bruns of
White Marsh Yard and Scott Robbins
of Crofton Yard.
Riggs Distler also had a Pole Top
Rescue class for linemen and apprentices.
The training was through ALBAT
and held at Crofton Yard.
CHRIS A. BROWN, PRES.
Fifth District Int. Rep. Fielding
Gurley (left) congratulates then
Local 84 staff member Bro. Dewey
Lovell on his retirement. Bro.
Lovell recently passed away.
training in the U. S. Army and served
his nation in the Korean War. Once he
returned to the states, he enrolled in
the SELCAT program and received his
journeyman lineman certification.
In 1987 Dewey became a Local 84
assistant business manager when Bus.
Mgr. Doyle Howard added him to his
staff. Dewey’s qualifications and duties
were many, but he primarily served
the outside membership. Dewey
retired in December 2005 after battling
illness. But even after he retired, he
wanted to be back in the office serving
the membership. He was married
to Bette for 45 years and had three
didn’t start until fall. Ginna Nuclear
Power Plant, Borrilla Pasta Plant and
Delphi Automotive are all under way
and should give us some much
needed opportunities this winter.
We mourn the loss of Bro. Clarence
B. Trott, who passed away this year.
With the help of local politicians
and our members getting involved at
town meetings this too is creating jobs
in the elusive commercial market.
Being active and getting involved in
politics and the community is essential
if we are to be successful!
Happy holidays! And hopefully a
more prosperous New Year!
new kitchen, which will enable
Local 98 to host many more catered
events. Also included in the auditorium
are a new stage, modernized restrooms
and state-of-the art furniture.
The room’s vibrant colors and
newly installed elevator were done
with the physically challenged children
New Meeting Space
L.U. 98 (as,em,i&it), PHILADEL-
PHIA, PA—The meeting space at Local
98’s Spring Garden Street union hall
has undergone extensive renovations to
make the space more contemporary
and technologically capable. The stunning
results were available for all to see
in late September, when Local 98 celebrated
the grand opening of the new
auditorium with a union meeting and,
later, a fund-raiser for Gov. Ed Rendell.
Particularly impressive are the
educational components of the
apprentice training program: two
plasma TV screens and four projection
screens built into the walls, as well as
