ously turned down the request. Trade
unions and individual members contacted
each City Council member in
person or by e-mail to help overturn
the zoning committee vote. The entire
community had a turn to speak if they
wanted to be heard. The vote was
unanimous in favor of the plant.
This will provide local jobs, and the
plant will be the largest of its kind in
Illinois. Work will start soon.
A “bag house” project at the Vermilion
Power Station for Dynegy has
started. It is staffing up slowly at this
writing.
Several members are working out
of town. We have about 40 on Book I
and approximately 90 on Book II.
Spring and summer have passed
and work never took off as expected.
Thanks to the locals that have our
members working.
Remember to treat each other well
on the jobsite even when the pressure
is on. We still have brotherhood!
Summer Recap
L.U. 540 (i), CANTON, OH—Work
this past summer was steady, thanks to
a lot of school work and millwork. At
this writing, Ohio is in the midst of a
very important political year. Many of
our members are helping out with
midterm campaigns, candidates and
issues that will make an impact on our
livelihood and future.
The JATC was busy this past summer
with many journeyman classes,
including three 10-hour OSHA classes
leading up to our fall 30-hour class.
Congratulations to John Reese and
his committee for the successful summer
golf outing.
and friends. Reno helped Local 540 in
many capacities and served as our president
from 1980–92. He will be missed.
look. The building is undergoing lots
of changes and some face-lifts. All
work has been awarded to local union
contractors. There will be a larger
meeting hall for gatherings. We hope
to hold retirees dinners there as well.
Offices will be expanded and there
will be new conference areas. There
will be a much needed file room and
we may possibly have an archives
area as well. The waiting area will also
be improved.
Thanks to Fin. Sec. Larry Farmer
and all who have worked overseeing
the work as it progresses. It is a
building we will all be proud of.
The building will also house the
apprentice school. Apprentice Dir. Ron
Weaver and Pres. Steve Crunk have
visited other exceptional apprentice
schools in the hope of making vast
improvements to our labs, classrooms
and school in general. Great things are
in store for the apprentices.
A third complex, the Local 558
Credit Union, will be right next door.
Credit Union Dir. Faye Helton and the
board assure us it will also be a super
nice building,
Thanks to all on the continuing
work! God bless each of you!
Dinner Dance
L.U. 596 (i,o&j), CLARKSBURG,
WV—A dinner-dance was held Sept. 23
for all members, retirees and their
guests at the union-built Stonewall
resort in Roanoke, WV. It was an
evening filled with good food, good
fellowship and great music provided by
“Rick K. and the All Nighters.” Everyone
enjoyed the occasion. IBEW service
pins were awarded to members for
five years through 60 years of service.
The work picture for our local is still
very slow as of this writing. However,
with many projects just starting or coming
out of the ground, the 2007 construction
season looks very promising.
