UPTEMPO Magazine

Giving thanks is what this month is all about. It’s the time of year when a shift in seasonal weather induces a shift in our mental state. We begin to reflect on the year now coming close to an end in order to start thinking about what we want for the next. Our loved ones come together for the obligatory holiday outings, and though we often forget, we soon begin to remember what keeps us going all year long and what brings those most cherished together to one table... food. Let’s be real, it’s true. Why do we love to over indulge this time of year in a glutinous rage of frenzy? Because it’s comforting, it’s delicious, and despite what some of our models may say, eating is what we do to stay alive. It manages to bring together all walks of life in peaceful harmony, as it did at the first Thanksgiving, and as it will do for years to come.

FOREWORD
Giving thanks is what this month is all about.
It’s the time of year when a shift in seasonal
weather induces a shift in our mental state.
We begin to reflect on the year now coming
close to an end in order to start thinking
about what we want for the next. Our loved
ones come together for the obligatory holiday
outings, and though we often forget, we soon
begin to remember what keeps us going all year
long and what brings those most cherished
together to one table... food.
Let’s be real, it’s true. Why do we love to
over indulge this time of year in a glutinous
rage of frenzy? Because it’s comforting, it’s
delicious, and despite what some of our models
may say, eating is what we do to stay alive.
It manages to bring together all walks of life
in peaceful harmony, as it did at the first
Thanksgiving, and as it will do for years to
come.
With that, we’ve been pretty hungry and
thought this might be a good time to showcase
some food... and fashion, of course. We open
this issue with “Favorite Foods” by the
talented Ila Schaffer, which highlights the
best of junk food through knitwear. From
there, your mouth will water through several
other culinary highlights including Matt
Solomon’s “See Food,” Nick Proot’s “Food Is
Fashion,” Julia Kiecksee’s “From Turkey With
Love,” and Maggi Mariela’s “Dinner For Two.”
Additionally, we had to pay tribute to our
Thanksgiving founders, so we’re proud to
showcase Anna Theodora’s “Solo Tribe” and
Salvador Pozo’s “Azteca.” Of course, November
wouldn’t be complete without some “Movember”
love to menswear in Marta Balastequi’s
“Sharpest Fall” and some seasonal luxuries in
Helen Sobiralski’s “Dark Harvest.”
Stay tuned for our last and final installation
of 2013. The December Issue, a tribute to the
best of our 2013 features, curated by color.
Happy Thanksgiving,
