Open Day Report Long Marston Open Weekend, 17 th - 18 th Sep 2011 by Neil Dix: The annual Long Marston Open Weekend took place this year over the 17 th & 18 th September and despite the late notice (It was not advertised until early August) there was still a decent turnout. This year more of the site was open to the public and guided tours lasting almost two hours were available to see the 'out-of-bounds' areas. 86215 heads a line up of electric locos 86217, 86247 (Europhoenix), 86229, 86242, 87009 86235, 86228, & 86231 The Open weekend was billed as the 70 th anniversary of the Long Marston complex. Opened in 1941, the site was used as the Central Engineers Depot for the MOD. When the MOD closed the site 1999 it was purchased by St.Modwen Developments and was re-opened to rail traffic in 2005. Today, Motorail logistics are responsible for operating the railway at Long Marston. At just under 500 acres, the site is vast and has a mixture of warehousing, sidings, woodlands, drainage channels, Remnants from the MOD days and a plentiful supply of rabbit holes! If nature is your thing, it's not just rabbits that will interest you. Whilst photographing redundant Virgin DVTs, I turned around to see the delightful sight of two young deer gracefully making their way through the nearby trees. Graceful that is until they saw me....and then all hell broke loose as they charged full tilt in the opposite direction! 37696 20088 (RFS 2017)
20016 heads a line of locos to 20903, 7 x industrial shunters, 37696, 47829, 20088 (RFS 2017), 20081 & 20057 the other end of the line with 20057, 20081, 20088 (RFS 2017) & 47829 Due to its vast size you really needed to be there all day if you wanted to see everything as well as go for a ride on the resident DMU and join the afternoon tour. It was good to see the two Europhoenix Cl. 87s on show and not far away was the test track complete with overhead wires - something I had not seen at Long Marston before. Both days were predominantly dry although Saturday appears to have had more sunshine. For my visit on Sunday it was mostly cloudy with a little hazy sunshine and a short shower mid way through the guided tour which incidentally was excellently given by Motorail UK Ltd Chief Executive Ruth Flack- Dunmore. unidentified Wickham trolley tour vehicle DMU 51376 + 59505 + 51352 alongside the temp platform
