Based on such a two-stage searching process, the balance between the execution of workflow instances with temporal violations and those workflow instances without temporal violations can be achieved. 3.5 Simulation Environments The framework proposed in this thesis is being gradually implemented as system components in our SwinDeW-C (Swinburne Decentralised Workflow for Cloud) scientific cloud workflow system [53, 59, 96]. SwinDeW-C is a cloud workflow system prototype built on SwinCloud, a cloud computing test bed. All the simulation experiments demonstrated in this thesis are conducted in our SwinCloud environment. Therefore, to present to the readers a clear picture of a scientific cloud workflow system and avoid the redundancy of the introduction about simulation environments in the subsequent chapters, SwinDeW-C and SwinCloud are demonstrated earlier in this section. The SwinCloud infrastructure and SwinDeW-C architecture are depicted in Figure 3.2 and Figure 3.3 respectively. Figure 3.2 SwinCloud Infrastructure SwinCloud is a cloud computing simulation test bed, on which SwinDeW-C is 34
currently running. It is built on the computing facilities in Swinburne University of Technology and takes advantage of the existing SwinGrid systems [95]. For example, the Swinburne Astrophysics Supercomputer Node (http://astronomy.swin. edu.au/supercomputing/) comprises 145 nodes of Dell Power Edge 1950 nodes each with: 2 quad-core Clovertown processors at 2.33 GHz (each processor is 64-bit lowvolt Intel Xeon 5138), 16 GB RAM and 2 x 500 GB drives. We install VMWare [91] on SwinGrid, so that it can offer unified computing and storage resources. By utilising the unified resources, we set up data centres that can host applications.
