Below <strong>the</strong> broad aggregates, <strong>the</strong> details of specific rural nonfarm economies reveal<br />
rich differences across countries and even across regions with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same country (Box 2). In<br />
Nyanza Prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Kenya, rural manufactur<strong>in</strong>g looms larger than elsewhere, primarily<br />
because of <strong>the</strong> prevalence of home-brew<strong>in</strong>g of maize beer, pombe, a pattern that repeats itself<br />
<strong>in</strong> most African countries outside <strong>the</strong> tuber-dom<strong>in</strong>ated tropical zones (see, <strong>for</strong> example,<br />
Botswana 1976; Wilcock and Chuta 1982; Fisseha 1985). Elsewhere <strong>in</strong> Kenya, as <strong>in</strong> Central<br />
Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, where brew<strong>in</strong>g is less prom<strong>in</strong>ent, nonfarm services become relatively more<br />
important (Table 5). And <strong>in</strong> a classic green revolution region of Malaysia, public services,
