saw mill<strong>in</strong>g dom<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> RNFE (Table 5). Each rural region offers its own dist<strong>in</strong>ct flavor<br />
and requires site-specific <strong>in</strong>vestigation to establish a good understand<strong>in</strong>g of future<br />
opportunities and constra<strong>in</strong>ts to rural nonfarm growth.<br />
c. Importance of large firms<br />
Though most RNF enterprises are small and employ less than 5 workers, larger firms<br />
often account <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> majority of output and <strong>in</strong>comes. Large firms play particularly<br />
important roles <strong>in</strong> agroprocess<strong>in</strong>g, export and trad<strong>in</strong>g activities. In many situations, large<br />
firms occupy strategic positions <strong>in</strong> local supply cha<strong>in</strong>s. Because of this, <strong>the</strong>y many times<br />
govern prospects <strong>for</strong> small firm growth. In some cases, large firms compete directly with<br />
small firms. In o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stances, <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terests prove complementary, with large firms<br />
supply<strong>in</strong>g key <strong>in</strong>puts and market<strong>in</strong>g output of smaller nonfarm firms (Table 6).<br />
Though much prior work on <strong>the</strong> rural nonfarm economy has focused exclusively on<br />
small and microenterprises, operational work <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly recognizes <strong>the</strong> importance of<br />
view<strong>in</strong>g small and large firms toge<strong>the</strong>r with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vertical supply cha<strong>in</strong>s that b<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r (Figures 1-5).
