The Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Czech Republic (<strong>ASCR</strong>) is a leading non-university research<br />

institution in <strong>the</strong> Czech Republic. It was established in 1992 by <strong>the</strong> Czech National Council as<br />

a Czech successor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Czechoslovak Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences. The history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>ASCR</strong><br />

predecessors may be traced back through <strong>the</strong> Czechoslovak Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences (*1952), <strong>the</strong> Czech<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences and Arts (*1882), <strong>the</strong> Royal Czech Learned Society (*1784) down to <strong>the</strong> Privat<br />

Society for Sciences (*1773).<br />

Today’s <strong>ASCR</strong> conducts research in many scientific directions and co-operates with numerous<br />

scientific institutions, universities, as well as business organizations and cultural establishments in <strong>the</strong><br />

Czech Republic and abroad. The <strong>ASCR</strong> is a fully consistent research body open to full-scale<br />

integration into <strong>the</strong> European research space. Both <strong>the</strong> fundamental and applied research are key areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>ASCR</strong>'s activities. About 6300 employees are working in 57 institutes and 4 technical facilities.<br />

Research institutes are grouped into three scientific divisions according to <strong>the</strong>ir research pr<strong>of</strong>iles.<br />
