What's special with Chainflex ® bus <strong>cables</strong>?<br />

Rainer Rössel: Chainflex ® bus <strong>cables</strong> are special, because we have designed<br />

consumer products for industrial use. This is not just giving the consumer product<br />

a new name. The complete cable concept was fitted to the requirements<br />

of the industrial everyday use. Due to the usage of robust materials and tuned<br />

stranding and shielding the <strong>cables</strong> are highly flexible and perfect for the permanently-moving<br />

industrial use in E-Chains ® as for all other industrial applications<br />

where chemical resistance is needed.<br />

How can I choose the best cable?<br />

Rainer Rössel: First you have to decide, which bus concept you want to use.<br />

For example if you choose USB, you can – depending on the delivery program<br />

for interfaces of your camera manufacturer – take an USB-copper cable or a<br />

fiber optic. By choosing a FOC, the utilised interface must have a connection<br />

for fiberoptic.<br />

How are the <strong>cables</strong> delivered?<br />

Rainer Rössel: There are two possibilities. You can order the <strong>cables</strong> without<br />

any cutting costs or minimum order quantity with the length that you need or<br />

we deliver it assembled with all connections according to your specifications.<br />

The connectors listed in this catalog only show a small number of the wide<br />

range of possible components. You can decide the plug-type and the connector<br />

(depending on availability and technical reasons). We start one-off and look<br />

forward to your request.<br />

Does the data transfer work with every system?<br />

Rainer Rössel: Normally yes. The high mechanical resistance is realized by the<br />

usage of high-quality materials, which can guarantee even electrical secureness.<br />

In single cases communication errors can occur, if very different hardware<br />

and software is combined. We recommend tests with all components before<br />

starting serial production, to get the proove for a perfect running system. Of<br />

course we support you with these tests. Just give me a call!<br />

The igus ® laboratory in Cologne. More than 80 tests with E-Chains ® and Chainflex ®<br />

<strong>cables</strong> every day.<br />

With the development of resolution and sampling rates, data volumes increase inevitably.<br />

For this reason fast cable concepts were adopted which were already successful in consumer<br />

products with these data volumes. For example FireWire (1394a and 1394b), USB<br />

(2.0), and Gigabit Ethernet or even CameraLink.<br />

These cable concepts utilise special <strong>cables</strong> which are offered by several manufacturers for<br />

extremly low prices.<br />

If these low cost <strong>cables</strong> are used in the typical industrial apllication with chemical, electromagnetic<br />

and mechanical influences, blackouts cannot be prevented.<br />

After the experiences with Chainflex ® -<strong>cables</strong> in thousands of applications with bus concepts<br />

like Profibus, Interbus, DeviceNet etc. and costumers' requests for similar <strong>cables</strong> for<br />

high speed bus concepts, igus ® developed its own bus cable series. For example:<br />

● CFBUS.044 for GigE<br />

● CFBUS.055 for FireWire 1394a<br />

● CFBUS.065 and CFBUS.066 for USB 2.0<br />

● CFLG.2HG.MF. Fiber optic cable for bus concept-independent long travels<br />

The main aspect in developing was a mechanical solid cable, that can guarantee its capacitive,<br />

inductive and optical properties for a high number of strokes.<br />

All igus ® <strong>cables</strong> are testes in the igus ® laboratory. But for this task there were no test conditions.<br />

igus ® ' engineers choosed a very bottom-line way.<br />

Different industrial cameras were moved with 2 m/s speed, 5m/s² acceleration on a 600mm<br />

course. In the utilised E-Chains ® the bus <strong>cables</strong> were moved permanently.<br />

Even with the long cable length there was<br />

no loss in the image quality after these<br />

numbers of strokes.<br />

This test is not scientific but related to practice<br />

and it prooves clearly the industrial<br />

suitability of these high speed bus <strong>cables</strong>.<br />

The test has not been finished by now and<br />

will be continued.<br />
