TECHNICAL SCOPE OF WORK<br />
1. Introduction<br />
The <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Science is a premier Research <strong>and</strong><br />
Education institute in the country. The campus has a fiber based<br />
gigabit Ethernet backbone spread across 1.5 square kms <strong>of</strong> the<br />
campus area <strong>to</strong> interconnect the various departments on campus.<br />
The network comprises <strong>of</strong> a core Ethernet switch that <strong>for</strong>ms the<br />
root <strong>of</strong> the tree <strong>to</strong>pology <strong>of</strong> the gigabit Ethernet backbone. The tree<br />
is organized in<strong>to</strong> level 1, level 2 <strong>and</strong> level 3 nodes (a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> about<br />
57) <strong>and</strong> there are about 3000 plus end systems in the campus that<br />
are interconnected.<br />
The campus hosts comprise <strong>of</strong> both clients <strong>and</strong> servers. Clients<br />
access the computing facilities at the SERC as well as the Internet.<br />
Servers on campus host in<strong>for</strong>mation that is accessible from the<br />
Internet.<br />
The campus has three access links <strong>to</strong> the Internet subscribed<br />
through three different Internet service providers.<br />
1.1 Internet Resources Availability<br />
The campus has a <strong>to</strong>tal address range <strong>of</strong> two /19s <strong>of</strong> the address<br />
144.16.0.0/16, allocated by ERNET <strong>for</strong> use on the campus.<br />
However, the campus consists <strong>of</strong> privately addressed hosts<br />
(10.0.0.0/8) accessing the Internet <strong>and</strong> publicly addressed servers<br />
(from the range mentioned above) providing in<strong>for</strong>mation via the<br />
Internet.<br />
1.2 Internet Services on campus<br />
The campus has direct access <strong>to</strong> resources on the Internet. All web<br />
access from campus <strong>to</strong> the Internet is through a www/ftp proxycache.<br />
All email coming in<strong>to</strong> <strong>and</strong> going out <strong>of</strong> the campus is<br />
through a single email server on campus. Within the campus,<br />
there are mail servers in each department providing mailbox<br />
access services <strong>to</strong> the local users.<br />
