TECHNICAL SCOPE OF WORK
1. Introduction
The Indian Institute of Science is a premier Research and
Education institute in the country. The campus has a fiber based
gigabit Ethernet backbone spread across 1.5 square kms of the
campus area to interconnect the various departments on campus.
The network comprises of a core Ethernet switch that forms the
root of the tree topology of the gigabit Ethernet backbone. The tree
is organized into level 1, level 2 and level 3 nodes (a total of about
57) and there are about 3000 plus end systems in the campus that
are interconnected.
The campus hosts comprise of both clients and servers. Clients
access the computing facilities at the SERC as well as the Internet.
Servers on campus host information that is accessible from the
Internet.
The campus has three access links to the Internet subscribed
through three different Internet service providers.
1.1 Internet Resources Availability
The campus has a total address range of two /19s of the address
144.16.0.0/16, allocated by ERNET for use on the campus.
However, the campus consists of privately addressed hosts
(10.0.0.0/8) accessing the Internet and publicly addressed servers
(from the range mentioned above) providing information via the
Internet.
1.2 Internet Services on campus
The campus has direct access to resources on the Internet. All web
access from campus to the Internet is through a www/ftp proxycache.
All email coming into and going out of the campus is
through a single email server on campus. Within the campus,
there are mail servers in each department providing mailbox
access services to the local users.
