including atavism. Bombarda (1851-1910) was a professor of physiology at the Escola<br />
Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa and director of the insane asylum at Rilhafolles, where the<br />
individuals he studied for this work were patients.<br />

FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this interesting collection of works by one of Brazil’s<br />
foremost physicians. The first work, with divisional title and separate pagination, is<br />
Memoria sobre algumas enfermidades do Rio de Janeiro, e mui particularmente sobre o abuso<br />
geral, e pernicioso effeito da applicação da preciosa casca peruviana, ou quina. In it Bomtempo<br />
draws upon his seven years’ experience treating tropical fevers in Angola to propose<br />
new treatments for a summer fever (complicated by hepatitis) and a winter fever then<br />
endemic in Brazil, and criticizes the excessive use of quinine. The other works, each<br />
with a divisional title but paginated continuously, are Plano ou regulamento interino, para
