In the 1880s, after gold and diamonds were discovered there, the Transvaal<br />
became the mainstay of Mozambique’s economy. Mozambique’s government recruited<br />
Mozambican workers for the labor-intensive mines. In exchange, the Transvaal sent freight<br />
on the railroad to Lourenço Marques and allowed Mozambique’s products preferential<br />
access in Transvaal markets. Wages of such workers were a major source of income for<br />
Mozambique, so a high mortality rate among the workers was cause for considerable<br />
economic concern.<br />

2 cm. at top, repaired and with missing portion drawn in skillfully; 1<br />
