First edition in Portuguese; a second edition appeared in Lisbon in 1841. Jean Girard,<br />
professor of anatomy at the royal veterinary school at Alfort, first published this study on<br />
determining ages of domesticated animals through examination of their teeth and horns<br />
in 1824, in the Recueil de médecine vétérinaire. This translation by the celebrated Portuguese<br />
veterinarian João Januario Vianna de Rezende has been considerably augmented with<br />
new material. Vianna de Rezende was born in Lisbon, earned his medical degree at Paris,<br />
and served as chief physician in Angola. He published several other works on veterinary<br />
medicine and edited the short-lived Jornal de medicina veterinaria (1828) and Jornal medico,<br />
cirurgico e pharmaceutico de Lisboa (1835).<br />
