Open house, receptions, service projects, hayrides, meetings,
ring ceremonies - the list could go on about the many club
activities that brought Harding University to life. Whether itwas
getting to know new students during receptions or meeting a
friend's date at a banquet, club events were perfect opportunities
to branch out and meet other Harding students. From the
excitement of new members to the familiarity of faces on "jersey
day," social clubs helped create lasting bonds of friendship.
Although each club had its own traditions and activities,
several clubs often joined together for shaving cream fights,
devotionals at B Rock, service projects or something as simple as
eating together in the cafeteria. Social clubs created the opportunity
to become friends with people of similar personalities and
hobbies and also to form a close-knit support group.
Each club at Harding focused on the same destination: an
eternal walk with God. Although this idea was expressed and
encouraged differently within the various clubs, there was an
underlying web of unity among the clubs on campus. Clubs may
have created distinctions between students, but the ultimate
purpose of each club was the same.
Changes made again
in club induction process
Social club induction processes were in the second year of the
changes begun in the fall semester of 1994. Revisions for this
season of induction activities were significant, positive and easier
on both club members and the prospective members, but not as
overwhelming as the changes that occurred in the 1994-95
school year.
Club orientation actually began during Student Impact, when
a power session for incoming students was held to inform prospective
members of their options regarding social club membership.
Other informational meetings, such as freshmen chapels,
served the same purpose. Jenny Behel, a freshman involved in the
induction process, felt things got a little confusing towards the
end. "I wish there could have been more announcements in the
dorms or in chapel about when everything was going on. It got
really hectic towards the end, and it was hard to remember what
happened and where," she said.
The traditional Open House allowed new students to view all of
the social clubs in a single, two-hour showcase. This was the
students' first personal experience with entire clubs. Women's
Open House was held September 2 in the morning and men's
Open House was in the afternoon of the same day in the New Gym.
Revised induction process
unites new and old ideas
September 3rd through October 4th marked reception rounds
one through three. The first round went as in the past, with every
club hosting a single, two-hour reception; prospective members
were encouraged to attend as many as possible.
The second round was a new experience for all involved this
year, as no receptions were held. Instead, upperclass students
visited the freshmen in their dorms during the week in order to
have more one-on-one time to get to know each other. Jennifer
Strickland, a member of ZetaBho, felt the upperclass visitation
was positive. "This year's selection process was better organized,
and visitation went much faster than most people expected," she
said.
Invitations were sent out on September 23 regarding round
three after clubs and prospective members had voted once.
During the following two weeks, clubs and freshmen met again
for one-and-a-half-hour receptions which were once again nonconflicting
with other clubs and to which freshmen received
invitations. Following this round, inductees voted a second time,
ranking all clubs in order of preference.
"I have seen a lot more desire from both members and freshmen
to be involved. This year, the process seems less of a task and
more fun. There has been a good attitude among the freshmen in
general," Chad McNatt, sophomore member of Delta Chi Delta,
said.
Members pleased with return
to one-week commitment
Round four was another visitation round in which the prospective
members visited the upperclassmen in an effort to narrow
their options. The students were invited to visit four clubs during
this round.
On October 16, the prospective club members voted in their
dorr!1s at curfew, prioritizing their top four choices. Voting was
another change in the procedure; last year, it seemed that many
students forgot to or could not go to the Student Services Office
to vote during business hours. RA's helped freshmen and transfers
fill out their ballots, and then the votes were given to student
services. The new students' first-choice cards were later given to
respective club presidents, and the clubs once again voted on
their new members.
Bids were presented to the new class II members by thei r
resident assistants on Sunday afternoon, October 29. The optional
welcome receptions were held immediately following the
distribution of bids, and the week-long commitment phase began
that evening with an orientation meeting. Excitement for the
return of the week-long commitment phase was obvious among
all students. Ellen Fowler, Kappa Gamma Epsilon member, said,
"Last year's commitment phase seemed almost more trouble
than it was worth. I'm glad to see the return of the one-week
process."
Commitment week
Lengthy commitment phase
meets with dissatisfaction
Seven weeks of activities allowed these new Class II members
to ream the club's history and to show their desire to be part of the
club. In order to reduce the potential for physical or emotional
inj ury, clubs were prohibited from lining the inductees up,
singling them out, or sending mail to them.
The reaction of the student hody to the new system resulted in
general dissatisfaction. "It lasted so long that we just became
frustrated after a whi le because we had other things to do," Greg
Swackhamer, a 1994 inductee, said. Steven Mogey agreed, "There
was not enough excitement in the process because it dragged on
for so long that we couldn't really focus on the club activities."
Keri Kruse pledged her club in 1992 and observed the change
as a problem. "I thought it was really emotionally draining for
everyone involved. Those of us who were already in the club
wondered if this was a valuable experience for the new girls at all ,"
she said. Swackhamer expressed another disadvantage of the new
system: "I don't think we learned to respect our club brothers as
much as we could have because we knew that, with all the rules,
they couldn't really do anythi ng to us."
Indepth evaluation of changes
leads to additional revisions
Although many students did not approve of the change in the
induction process, most of them cooperated with the rules and
adapted to the system. "I tried to understand that, no matter what
induction process there was, it would turn out all right if it was
under the guidance of God," Kruse said.
Despite the good attitude, everyone real ized that the new
system needed some modification if it were to be effective. For
this reason, the club Induction Review Team met to consider the
advantages and disadvantages of the induction process. This
team consisted of 10 students elected by the ICC, four club
sponsors, three faculty members and deans James Anderson and
Peggy Huckeba. After considering several ideas, the team decided
to return to a one-week induction process with a number of
differences from the old system.
Although itwas not the only change made, the most significant
of these differences was probably that the traditional "silly day" at
the end of pledge week was completely eliminated. Many students
who pledged clubs in 1993 or earli er had hoped "silly day" would
return. It was determined that "silly day" focused too much on
humiliating inductees and not enough emphasis was placed on
schoolwork and extracurricular activities.
Commitment week
IRT reinstates pledge week;
places time limit on activities
Another change emerged when each club was li mited to a fourhour
time period for each day's activities. This time was filled
differently by each club. Many clubs combined efforts for si lly
olympics, shaving cream fights or talent shows. Regardless of
how the clubs chose to spend the day, each made the most of their
four hours together.
Most students, especially the ones who had become members
of a club in 1994, were relieved with the change. "I think the new
system is better both academically and emotionally because
everyone can focus completely on pledge week and then get back
to school work," Kruse said. Swackhamer was glad to see the
return to the one-week system. ''With everything happening at
once, there was more unity because the pledges really had to stick
together for encouragement," he said.
The 1995 process was positively received by the newcomers as
well, even though they could not compare it to the previous year.
"I was really busy, but overall 1 had a lot of fun and made some
good memories," Kevin Parrish, a 1995 inductee, said.
Looking back over the difficult process of change, one can say
that the results were positive. "The system now gives pledges
some safety without limiting the activities too much," Kruse said.
Clubs dissolve
Three of Harding's social clubs
disband after long histories
When an environment changes, individuals and groups must
either adapt or perish. They can grow from the experience, or they
can suffer. Sometimes, however, no matter how they strive to
change with the flow, their circumstances change too rapidly for
them to keep up.
.'
The social club system has been undergoing change during the
last few years, and each club has had to adapt in its own way. While
the recent reforms in the social club system have had many
positive aspects, they have also had their casualties: the disbanding
of Alpha Gamma Omega, Lambda Sigma and Phi Delta, three
of Harding's oldest clubs.
With the changes in the club system, many social club members
felt that larger clubs began to gain popularity while smaller
clubs were often overlooked. They attributed this, in part, to not
getting as many members "off the table" - the old system in whi ch
new members who did not get their first choice clubs received a
bid from another club. In recent years, smaller clubs had received
a large induction class by taking these new members, along with
their first-choice inductees.
Clubs dissolve
Small clubs struggle to survive
as club membership declines
Some members also felt that the new club system favored
larger clubs. Former Phi Delta member Jessica Henderson said,
"New inductees tend to hear more about big clubs than small
one.s. Our induction classes just got smaller and smaller. Last
year, we only had two inductees." Jeremy Wallace, a former Alpha
Gamma Omega member, said, "Large clubs ·have a reputation
which attracts members. Smaller clubs are less visible."
As their membership declined, these small clubs struggled to
survive, but they were faced with too many problems. "I wouldn't
say the new club system was the only reason we disbanded,"
former Lambda Sigma member Jim Tuley said, "but I think it was
the final nail in the coffin. We were already at a disadvantage
because it's harder for small clubs to do projects, and there is so
much paper work."
Because many members who went inactive or graduated were
not replaced by inductees under the new system, small clubs had
to consider whether they had sufficient numbers to continue
functioning. For Alpha Gamma Omega, Lambda Sigma and Phi
Delta, the answer was unfortunately "no," and these three small
clubs fina lly disbanded. For Phi Delta, the decision to disband was
especially sad because they had just celebrated their 50th anniversary
in 1994.
On the other hand, knowing that their club had been successful
for 50 years made the pain of separation a little easier to bear.
Many members also retained the close relationships which characterized
their small clubs. Former Phi Delta member Joanne
Mitchell said, "We were very close in our club. Four of us jumped
to Ka Re Ta when Phi Delta disbanded, so we're still together."
Members of Alpha Gamma O~ega remained close, and several
jumped to Sigma Tau Sigma.
Also, the members of the disbanded clubs continued to cherish
the special memories they created at meetings and functions.
Tammie Rosenbaum said, "My favorite memory from my Phi
Delta days was the talent show at my spring banquet."
Phi Delta sponsor Janice Myers remembers, "We always had a
great time at our Christmas parties. The Phi Delta girls were so
unselfish. They did nice things for the sponsors, like letting us go
first in line and bringing us gifts. The girls all had a great spirit.
They wanted to be together, but finally we had to face the reality
that we just didn't have enough new members. I told them we had
nothing to be ashamed of in disbanding. Our club had 50 good
years together."
Interclub Council
Council members work
to improve club relations
The Interclub Council serves as a source of information and
insight fo r both club members and the Harding administration.
Composed of students from each social club, usually the president
and vice president, the ICC is sponsored by Deans Peggy
Huckeba and James Anderson.
ICC gives representatives a chance to learn more about clubrelated
business, allows its representatives to voice opinions, and
gives the deans input about what works, what does not and any
potential problems on a student level. "As elected officers of our
clubs, we try to speak as fairly as we can for our clubs," Rachel
Carter, vice president of Zeta Rho and executive secretary of the
Interclub Council, said. When asked if getting input from
students in ICC has made a difference, Huckeba replied, "Definitely!
We couldn't do it without them."
The ICC does not actually make policy decisions, but they
propose, discuss and vote on recommendations at their meetings.
These recommendations are then taken to the deans for approval.
"A lot of times, recommendations can be approved immediately,
but that's not always the case. Sometimes we must get more
input before we can come to a decision," Huckeba said.
With the revised induction process, several new issues were
addressed this year. The ICC made recommendations regarding
whether there should be food at receptions and whether bulk mail
should be sent to potential club members. "We're trying to make
the induction process as fair to each club as possible," Carter said.
Each semester, executive council members are elected, with
six members - three male and three female from different clubs.
These executive members act as liaisons between the ICC and the
administration. They also make decisions for the ICC when there
is not enough time to call a meeting of the entire council.
The Interclub Council provides positive, meaningful leadership
for social clubs. The information they give and receive helps
decisions to be made as members work closely with the administration.
Regina Spirit Award
Seniors honor Duke and Smith
for exemplary Christian lives
I John 3:18 describes the Christian example that the Regina
social club honors each year with the Regina SpiritAward - "Dear
children, let us not love with words ortongue butwith actions and
in truth."
Regina nominated 11 students - Scott Alexander, Jeff Brauer,
Tiffany Chester, Becky Clark, Johnna Duke, Becky Folkerts,
Cameron Hunter, Nathan Randolph, Daryl Rogers, Luke Smith
and Brian Snow - and the senior class chose Johnna Duke and
Luke Smith for this year's award.
Duke, a senior chemistry and vocational ministry major, and
Smith, a senior chemistry major, shared a common desire to
internalize I John 3:18 by allowing God to control their lives.
Duke cited her experiences with the Uganda team as a landmark
event in her life. "God has to break you down to rockbottom
nothing and empty you so that His Spirit can work
through you and fill you," she said. "Uganda was the beginning
of God's breaking me down. When God is disciplining you and
bringing you to a state of humility, you hate it. Then you look
back and realize it all made sense," she said.
Duke plans to return to Africa as a medical missionary. She
said her experience there taught her to submit fully to God so He
could do His works of love through her.
Smith, who plans to enter medical school, also wants God to
control his life. "My fiancee and I are considering a lot of options
right now," he said. "It's kind of exciting. If God sends us
overseas, great. Ifwe work here inAmerica, great. I know Godwill
present me with opportunities when I leave medical school."
Smith attributed much of his desire to love and serve others to
his study ofIJohn and the example of Monte Cox. "I John is ashort
book, but it has some powerful verses about love," he said. "Monte
taught me that the essence of the gospel is love when he taught
me I John. He encouraged me not to see culture, race or color
lines. He was an example of patience and of a willingness to serve.
He's the kind of man you look at and say, 'I want to be like that.'"
Duke also was influenced by a special passage of scripture.
"There's a verse in Judges 6 that means a lot to me, where God tells
Gideon, 'Go in the strength you have ... Am I not sending you?'
Gideon says he's too weak, and God reminds him that He is giving
him strength," she said.
By relying on God's control and strength, both Duke and Smith
learned that God blesses those who serve, sometimes in surprisingways.
"You don't get what you expect," Duke said. "You expect
to give and give and end up empty, but instead you end up fuller
than you ever were before."
Petit Tean Service Award
Regina members recognized
for service by the Petit Jean
The Petit Jean Service Award is given yearly to the social club
whose projects are selected for exemplifying the spirit of Christian
service that Harding promotes. Because of their endless
dedication to service, the women of Regina were recognized this
year for their commitment to helping others.
Reginasponsored and participated in numerous service projects
that were beneficial to the Searcy community. They regularly
made donations of clothing to His House, a benevolent establishment
sponsored by the College church, and several of the girls
volunteered as workers to help distribute the goods.
Regina women also made weekly visits to the elderly at Beverly
Health and Rehabilitation (formerly Leisure Lodge) in Searcy. "I
liked going to see the elderly a lot. 1 really enjoyed talking with
the people at the nursing home because 1 know they are sometimes
lonely. It is nice to go visit with the same people every week
because they know us and look forward to our coming to see
them," sophomore Catherine Wiltse said.
The biggest service project of the fall semester fo r the club was
the Christmas party they had for the children at the Searcy
Housing Authority. During the party, the chil dren wrote letters
to Santa Claus, asking for gifts that they wanted for Christmas.
The club members each took a letter and purchased some of the
requested toys for the children.
"The Housing Authority project was probably one of our
favorites of the year," fall service project director Suzy Oliver said.
"It was a lot of fun for everyone. When the presents were delivered
to the kids a week later, they really believed the presents were
from Santa Claus."
During the spring semester, Regina cooperated with Chi Omega
Pi in a car wash fundraiser. Proceeds were used to help purchase
hand controls for the van of Charles Smith, a quadriplegic
student. Local churches had contributed funds for the van and
electronic lift, but Smith would not be able to drive without the
hand controls.
The women of Regina also made contributions to the less
fortunate outside of the Searcy area. Through club members with
personal connections to hurricane victims in Florida, the club
collected and donated money for the restoration of affected areas.
Also, because of a club member's involvement in summer missions
to New Guinea, Regina donated money for the continuation
of Christian missions in that area.
go visit with
the same
people every
week because
and look
forward to
