Mäori <strong>Language</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies<br />
Types <strong>of</strong> <strong>Language</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies<br />
<strong>The</strong> HML surveys provide <strong>in</strong>formation on all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> language pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies. In language learn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>the</strong> passive language pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies <strong>of</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g and listen<strong>in</strong>g typically develop faster than <strong>the</strong><br />
active pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies <strong>of</strong> speak<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g. This is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> HML <strong>2006</strong> Survey which f<strong>in</strong>ds<br />
that <strong>the</strong>re are more people able to listen and read <strong>in</strong> Mäori than able to speak or write <strong>in</strong> it.<br />
<strong>The</strong> HML surveys also br<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dividual pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies to assess overall pr<strong>of</strong>iciency.<br />
Overall pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is a more accurate <strong>in</strong>dicator <strong>of</strong> language competencies than just speak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
or conversational abilities because <strong>the</strong> four language skills operate <strong>in</strong> unison <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual. 24<br />
Figure 4 below provides a summary picture <strong>of</strong> Mäori language pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies from <strong>the</strong> HML <strong>2006</strong><br />
Survey.<br />
