Appraisal<br />
Exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> people or the services they provide <strong>in</strong> order to judge their<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional qualities, successes or needs.<br />
Audit<br />
The process <strong>of</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g the quality <strong>of</strong> services aga<strong>in</strong>st explicit st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />
<strong>Cl<strong>in</strong>ical</strong> record<br />
The record <strong>of</strong> all aspects <strong>of</strong> the patient’s treatment, otherwise known as the<br />
patients notes.<br />
<strong>Cl<strong>in</strong>ical</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Care</strong><br />
<strong>Governance</strong> (CSCG)<br />
A framework with<strong>in</strong> which HSC is accountable for cont<strong>in</strong>uously improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the quality <strong>of</strong> their services <strong>and</strong> safeguard<strong>in</strong>g high st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> care <strong>and</strong><br />
treatment.<br />
Consultant<br />
Medical or dental practitioner who works <strong>in</strong>dependently without<br />
supervision.<br />
DHSSPS<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Health <strong>Social</strong> Services <strong>and</strong> Public Safety.<br />
Essence <strong>of</strong> <strong>Care</strong><br />
Patient-focused benchmark<strong>in</strong>g for health care practitioners designed to<br />
support the measures to improve quality.<br />
HSC Trust<br />
Informed consent<br />
Health <strong>and</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Care</strong> Trust. An organisation which provides health <strong>and</strong><br />
social care e.g. a Trust provid<strong>in</strong>g hospital <strong>and</strong> community services.<br />
The legal pr<strong>in</strong>ciple by which a patient is <strong>in</strong>formed about the nature, purpose<br />
<strong>and</strong> likely effects <strong>of</strong> any treatment proposed before be<strong>in</strong>g asked to consent<br />
to accept<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />
