Each <strong>in</strong>terviewer was <strong>in</strong>structed to beg<strong>in</strong> every <strong>in</strong>terview with an explanation <strong>of</strong> our project, a request for<br />

their help, an assurance that it was voluntary and they could decl<strong>in</strong>e to answer any question or discont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

at any time, and that we would not use their names <strong>in</strong> our report unless they wanted us to. Each<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewer was <strong>in</strong>structed to end each <strong>in</strong>terview by ask<strong>in</strong>g, “Do you have any questions for us (me)?”<br />

Each questionnaire was coded with the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation when possible, and a number was assigned<br />

for identification <strong>of</strong> the transcript <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terview. For groups, we tried to <strong>in</strong>clude the <strong>in</strong>formation on all <strong>of</strong><br />

the participants.<br />

5. What are the benefits for girls when they go to <strong>in</strong>itiation?<br />
