Suggestions Many suggestions were received from the public, both through the workshops and through the surveys. These suggestions could be classified in a number of ways, but we have chosen to adopt the five priority areas identified by the WA Active Ageing Strategy. Each of these has a number of sub-headings showing areas of particular concern to City of Stirling residents. All suggestions, as well as survey statements which received high support, were classified under the following headings and sub-headings: Community Awareness and Participation • Provide adequate information about what is available and how to access it. • Ensure that seniors are included in the whole community, not segregated. • Consult seniors about matters that affect them. • Assist older people to make new friends and connections within the community • Support existing organisations and facilities rather than duplicating them. Health and Wellbeing • Enable older people to keep fit by facilitating affordable physical activities and health education in their local area. Employment and Learning • Assist seniors to keep up to date with technology. • Enable senior residents to keep their minds active by facilitating activities and events in their local area. • Enable senior residents to continue working and living in their familiar environment. Protection and Security • Ensure that there is adequate support and assistance available for those who need it. • Respect the fact that many seniors have limited incomes and cannot afford high rates and charges. Planning and the Built Environment • Provide a safe and attractive environment that encourages older people to go out. • Ensure that seniors have access to appropriate transport. This list was then circulated to all City of Stirling business units for comment on the practicability of the proposals. 30
ADDRESSING THE NEEDS Research and consultation has shown the following: • There is a wide variety of activities available to older people in and around the City of Stirling. • There is a need to make these activities more accessible in terms of; • information about what they are and how to find out more about them; • opportunities to try without commitment; • transport. • The community would like the City to facilitate a range of health and fitness and learning activities in local centres. • There is potential for existing City of Stirling facilities to be more fully utilised. • Cost should be kept to a minimum. 31
