Strategy 2 – Ensure that all older people have the opportunity to be included in
community activities.
In previous generations there was an expectation that older citizens would prefer to spend much of
their leisure time with others who were similar in age and background. Pensioners’ Clubs, Autumn
Clubs etc. thrived, as did clubs for specific ethnic groups. While this is still often the case, increasingly
the focus of older people’s interest is the activity itself rather than the social group. Older people do
not see themselves as a separate group but simply as members of the whole community and are
happy to join with others of different age groups and ethnic origins to pursue an interest.

Action Responsibility Timeline
Ensure that older citizens are represented
in photographs and stories about the
City of Stirling.
Explore options for involving older CALD
people in mainstream activities.
Diversity of Stirling’s population to be
celebrated through multicultural and
intergenerational events & activities.
Where appropriate, advertise events
and activities in community languages
other than English.
No specific age cut-off for seniors’
activities, though where popular,
preference may be given to over-55s.
Community Centres and Community
Recreation Centres will be available for the
use of people of all ages, although some
may be developed to cater particularly for
the needs and interests of older people.
Investigate the viability of developing
community gardens or other sustainable
projects where all interested members
of the community can work together for
the benefit of the whole community.
