ACTION PLAN The actions outlined in this section reflect current, developing and future initiatives, both strategic and operational, developed from research and consultation and designed to support the City of Stirling’s growing senior population. Strategic Area 1 - Community Awareness and Participation The City of Stirling will maximise opportunities for older citizens to be involved in their community and participate in community activities. Strategy 1 – Ensure that all older citizens have access to accurate information about community programmes and activities. Many younger people now use the Internet as their primary source of information. Many seniors, however, are either unfamiliar with the use of the Internet or do not have easy access to a computer. While the number of senior Internet users is growing rapidly, it will be some time before this can be used as the primary source of communication with this group. For most, flyers or newsletters delivered to the mailbox and the local free community newspaper are the primary sources of printed information, but even more important than this is person-to-person contact, which may be by telephone or face to face. All front-line staff to receive specialised training in communication skills. Publish a brochure outlining City of Stirling programmes and activities suited to seniors. Ensure that it is updated frequently. On the Seniors Page, include links to the Community Information database, Stirling Volunteer Service and organisations that offer leisure time opportunities for older people. Ensure that information of particular relevance to seniors is published in the Community newspapers and if necessary, reinforced from time to time. Publicise the work of City of Stirling volunteers, especially during National Volunteer Week. Regularly publish a City of Stirling handbook or information directory for distribution to all residents.
