lake te anau
The serene deep waters of Lake Te Anau make up the largest lake in the South
Island and are boarded on the Western shore by virgin forest. Across the blue and
silver waters of the lake mountains guard access to some of New Zealand’s most
spectacular scenery. Three long ‘arms’ extend many kilometres into the mountains
on the west, and are also often referred to as inland fiords. These arms once held
glaciers which flowed into one central trough, grinding out what now forms the bed
of Lake Te Anau.
Many locals argue that the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau has scenery to rival that of its
better known coastal cousins, and whether it’s a fishing excursion to troll the lakes
waters for an elusive trout, a water taxi to one of the many beautiful bays and forest
walkways that fringe the lake, or a day or overnight cruise on Lake Te Anau, there is
certainly plenty to explore here.
Milford Sound
Milford is by far the best known of the fiords, and the only one that can be reached by road in a 2½ hour car journey from
Te Anau. The Fiord is approximately 16km from the ‘head’ to the open sea, which means visitors can comfortably travel the
length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea and return in only 1½ to 2 hours. There are many cruise options available for this.
Facilities in Milford
Visitors need to be aware that there are limited facilities in Milford itself. Full lunches are provided on board by some cruise
operators (if pre-booked), and the Blue Duck Café and restaurant at Milford Lodge also provide dining options.
There is limited fuel available within Milford Sound so you need to fill up before departing Te Anau. Car parking is available
for FIT travellers with a ten minute walk from the carpark to the boat departure terminal and information area.
Accommodation
The overnight boats and Milford Sound Lodge are the only options for accommodation within Milford, and visitors need to
book well in advance for either of these.
There is a free bus that completes a circuit between the airstrip, café and car park, and the boat departure terminal. The
free bus/shuttle service provided by the Milford Sound Development Authority ensures visitors can get between these
areas in times of adverse weather conditions, and can save visitors a lengthy walk!
Mitre Peak Cruises
milford sound
The Milford Sound sightseeing cruise - Mitre Peak Cruises - is an exclusive, uncrowded, unhurried cruise providing a very personal,
nature-oriented experience for visitors to Milford Sound. Our vessels are small and intimate, purpose built, and with five different
viewing areas provide spectacular viewing of dramatic and powerful Milford Sound. In summer we have scheduled trips seven times
a day with the capacity to arrange special charters also. Our route traverses the complete fiord and extends into the Tasman Sea
out to the lighthouse at St Anne’s Point. Our Skipper provides informative commentary venturing up the fiord, stopping frequently
exploring cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, rugged peaks, lush rainforest, seals and penguins. Should dolphins be at play, we
make time to observe their exuberance.
Mitre Peak Cruises sightseeing trips are ideally suited to independent travellers, backpackers, family groups and specialist tour
groups. Our office is located inside the Milford Sound Visitor Centre and our vessel departs just outside the main jetty area.
Complimentary tea and coffee is available throughout the cruise.
lake Manapouri
There are few lakes more mysterious than Lake Manapouri; brooding, tranquil, tempestuous, serene, glowering, amazing—
all are words that have been used to describe the lake in one of its compelling moods. The otherwordly atmosphere of
sights on and adjacent to the lake were used in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and most visitors will have no problem
imagining orcs and hobbits amidst the dense rainforest as they travel across the lake.
A feature of Lake Manapouri is the number of coves, bays and islands set in astonishingly pure water. Today launches,
yachts and kayaks are regularly seen on the lake, but those who have come to know this extraordinary lake value the
seclusion and pristine atmosphere to be found in the many arms and bays.
Doubtful Sound
The trip to Doubtful Sound starts with a boat trip across Lake Manapouri, followed by a bus journey over the rugged
Wilmot Pass. This 22km road connects West Arm in Lake Manapouri to Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound, and was built during
the construction of the power project. A trip to the underground power station at West Arm to view the massive turbines
inside the mountain cavern makes an interesting side trip.
Doubtful Sound is the deepest of the fiords at 421m deep, and is long and winding with three distinct ‘arms’ between Deep
Cove and the open sea – a distance of over 40 kilometres.
Coach & Cruise
Coach and Cruise options listed are ex Te Anau and provide visitors with the ability to relax and enjoy the scenery. Most coaches
operating into Milford offer special features such as glass panels in the roof to maximise the view. Most companies also offer full
commentary providing insights into the stunning scenic highlights, and history of the area, and ample photographic stops to
stretch the legs at all the best spots. This option offers stress free travelling while someone else does the driving!
We particularly recommend this option in winter as experienced local drivers can ease the worry on travelling on this
mountainous highway in snow and icy conditions. Local drivers experience and training enables them to be the best judges of
the driving conditions, and allows visitors to hang up the keys for the day and truly enjoy the scenery outside the window!
Diving
The underwater environment in the fiords is one of the most intriguing and unique in the world. This is not only because
of the beautiful natural environment and the marine reserves that exist here, but also because of an interesting effect
of the high rainfall in the area that creates a layer that filters light. As a result species that normally live at great
depths are found much closer to the surface in Fiordland waters. This gives divers, as well as visitors to the Underwater
Observatory, the opportunity to see rare species such as the red and black corals at relatively shallow depths.
fishing
Fiordland has fishing opportunities to suit all abilities, ranging from Lake Henry in the Ivon Wilson Park which is specially
stocked for children to try angling, through to wilderness fly fishing. Local guides offer the finest knowledge including
advice on the best locations and techniques to successfully fish local sites
The fishery of Lakes Te Anau & Manapouri are dominated by brown trout however the catchability of the rainbow ensures it is taken
almost as readily. The size of trout caught in these lakes varies between 1-3kg. Lakes Te Anau, Manapouri, Hauroko, Monowai and
Poteriteri are open to fishing all year round from the 1 October to 30 September with only artificial fly and spin fishing allowed. Bag
limits are 4 fish per day. Lakes Fergus, Gunn and Hankinson are open from the 1 November to 31 May each year. Please check the
Southland Sports Fishing Regulation Book for up to date regulation information.
The lake tributaries of Te Anau, Manapouri, Monowai, Hauroko and Hankinson (except the Eglinton River) are open from the 1
November to 31 May each year with only artificial baits allowed. The bag limit for these tribs is 2 fish per day. The Eglinton River is
a fly fishing only river and is open from the 1 November to 31 May also with 2 fish allowed per day. However due to the threat of the
invasive alga Didymosphenia geminata the Director General of Conservation, at the request of Fish & Game NZ, Southland Region
has imposed restrictions and conditions on sports fishing in the rivers of the Fiordland National Park. All anglers wishing to fish in
the Fiordland National Park rivers should contact the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau ph 64 3 249 7921 or the Fish
& Game Office Te Anau 64 3 249 8249 for further information. The Fish & Game web site will also provide further information for
internet users www.fishandgame.org.nz. Go to the Southland Region. All anglers must have a current sports fishing licence to fish
and these are easily available from sports stores, dairies, garages, Fish & Game and DOC offices or can be ordered online.
didymo
Didymosphenia geminata (Didymo) was found in the lower Waiau and Mararoa rivers in Fiordland Southland in October 2004. Since
September 2005 Didymo has been found in the Tasman District (upper reaches of the Buller River), the Otago region (Hawea, Upper
Clutha and Von Rivers), the Canterbury region (Waitaki and the Ahuriri Rivers) and additional rivers in Southland (Oreti, Aparima
and Upper Waiau). Didymo has been declared an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993. It is an offence to knowingly
spread an unwanted organism with penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment, and/or a fine of up to $100,000. A Controlled Area
notice has been issued for the South Island. People using these rivers and lakes must comply with this notice. Movement controls
have also been declared at Monowai whilst scientific trials are being undertaken. To ensure you do not spread Didymo, wherever
possible restrict equipment, boats, clothing and other items for exclusive use in a single waterway.
If you are moving items between waterways you must:
Check: Before leaving the river, remove all obvious clumps of algae and look for hidden clumps. Leave them at the affected site.
If you find any later, do not wash them down drains. Treat them with the approved cleaning methods below, dry them
and put them in a rubbish bin.
Clean: Soak and scrub all items for at least one minute in either, hot (60°C) water, a two percent solution of household bleach
or a five percent solution of salt, nappy cleaner, antiseptic hand cleaner or dishwashing detergent. A two percent
solution is 200ml, a five percent solution is 500ml (two large cups), with water added to make 10 litres.
Dry: If cleaning is not practical (i.e. livestock), after the item is completely dry to touch, wait an additional 48 hours before
contact or use in any other waterway.
hunting
Anyone wishing to undertake hunting within the National Park must obtain a permit from the Department of
Conservation. Red deer thrived after their release within Fiordland National Park in the early 1900s. Throughout New
Zealand the introduced deer multiplied so rapidly that they quickly became a threat to the environment and organised
hunting operations were introduced in an attempt to reduce numbers. Recreational hunting has remained popular in the
Fiordland area - species include red deer, wapiti and chamois. The Wapiti is a larger species than the red deer, with the
original stock having been gifted to New Zealand by US President Roosevelt, and released within Fiordland in 1905. A
limited season exists for wapiti and the herd is closely managed.
Jet Boating
The deeply carved glacial valleys of Fiordland have created spectacular landscapes ideal for experiencing by boat. The
Waiau River, Lake Hauroko and Warairahiri River provide the accessways for operators listed within this section. The
Warairahiri has the steepest gradient of descent of any boatable river in New Zealand while the mysterious waters of
Lake Hauroko is NZ’s deepest lake at 462 metres. Jet boating offer an exciting and exhilarating way to experience these
this area a reputation as the ‘Walking Capital of the World.’ Amongst these are the ‘Great Walks’ the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn
Tracks. Te Anau makes a great start and end point for these trips. Walkers can stock up on provisions, and check the weather and track
conditions before leaving. With the track complete visitors relish returning to Te Anau to soak weary bones in the spa, buy plasters for
sore feet, and revive weary muscles with a massage before reliving their adventure in the warmth and comfort of a local cafe or bar.
40
fiordland trade manual 2010/11 activities
In addition to these multi-day tracks there is a range of short walks on diverse terrain, providing walking opportunities for people of
all ages and abilities. These walks enable access to the rainforest, lake and alpine vistas for those with limited time or fitness.
Weather
Fiordland weather is notoriously unpredictable and walkers should be prepared for cold temperatures, strong winds and heavy rain
at any time of year. Burning sun can also be a problem at times. It is essential to carry warm and waterproof clothing (even on a day
trip), and sunscreen.
TRACK CLASSIFICATIONS
Great Walks Tracks ‘Great Walks’ is a classification given by Department of Conservation (DOC) that indicates these tracks are
well formed and clearly marked and hut facilities are of a high standard. During the summer season (late October - late April) all DOC
huts and campsite accommodation on these tracks must be booked in advance. Bookings can be made online www.doc.govt.nz ; or at
the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau.
Tramping Tracks Tramping tracks are marked tracks, with limited track formation. They are suitable for people of average fitness,
who are experienced and well equipped. See below for the hut facilities provided.
Guided Walks Guided walks (using separate hut facilities) are also available on the Milford, Routeburn, Greenstone, Hump Ridge
and Hollyford Tracks. Guided day walks are also available. Local operators are listed in this section.
Routes Following a marked route requires a high degree of experience and skill in bush craft and map reading. Trampers should be
well equipped and carry the relevant topographical maps. There are numerous routes in Fiordland and some of these are unmarked.
For details refer to Moir’s Guide Southern Section, available for sale at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau.
Short Walks There are numerous short walks in Fiordland, many of them close to road access such as the Milford Road. For more
detailed information on walking opportunities ask staff at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau.
Intention Forms
Check the weather and track conditions before you leave. Trampers (excluding those on Great Walks tracks during the summer
season) should fill in an intention form to assist with their own safety. Experienced conservation staff at the Fiordland National
Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau can assist you to fill these out accurately. It is essential that you sign out on your return from the park.
Note: the Visitor Centre is open every day and trampers can also fill out or return intention forms after hours.

Out of Season Tramping
The alpine areas in Fiordland are often covered in snow or ice during the winter which may mean that tracks are hazardous or
impassable. Dangerous avalanche conditions are more common in late winter and spring. Trampers should always check with
conservation staff in the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre before venturing onto a track.
During the winter months (May to October) the Great Walks tracks are unserviced with no staff present, no cooking or heating
fuel supplied and no emergency radio facility provided. All trampers must pre-arrange their own transport and be capable of
looking after themselves. Department of Conservation huts are not locked on any of the tracks and no booking is required.
Hut Fees - Back Country Hut Tickets and Passes
There is no charge for walking any of New Zealand’s public tracks independently but there is a small fee to stay overnight in most
back country huts.
Fiordland’s three Great Walks tracks have a booking system for the following summer season (late October to late April). This
guarantees walkers a bed in each hut.
Other Fiordland tracks do not require prior booking and space is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. At times there can be
overcrowding in these huts.
An annual hut pass ($90) allows trampers to use most DOC huts except the Great Walks huts during the booked season from late
October to late April.
Back country hut tickets ($5) can be purchased at any DOC office for accommodation in standard huts (1 ticket per night) and
serviced huts (2 tickets per night). Place ticket stubs in the ticket box in the hut and keep the remainder as a receipt. There is no
charge to stay in a basic grade hut.
Safety - Radios/Personal Locator Beacons
Trampers on the more remote tracks or routes are advised to take either a mountain radio or personal locator beacon in case
emergency assistance is required. Trampers should not walk alone - the recommended minimum party size is four people.
Maps
42
The Parkmap Fiordland 273-64 3 (scale 1:250,000) gives a good overview of Fiordland. It is a useful guide for planning trips but does
not contain enough detail to be used in the field. Other specialised maps available are Trackmap Routeburn & Greenstone 335-02
(scale 1:75,000), Trackmap Kepler 335-09 (scale 1:50,000) and Trackmap Milford 335-01 (scale 1:75,000). These maps also provide
useful background information, interpretation and photographs of the tracks. Topographic metric maps (260 series, scale 1:50,000)
for the Fiordland region are also available for sale in the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre.
Keep Safe in the Hills!
fiordland trade manual 2010/11 activities
The Fiordland National Park is a mountainous area and can experience rapid changes in the weather. It is important to always be
prepared with the appropriate clothing and equipment and to check forecasts before you leave. If undertaking multi-day hiking
trails an emergency locator beacon is a must and can be hired from a range of outlets in Te Anau and Manapouri. Choose a trip
suitable for your skills, knowledge and experience - be realistic, if you’re not an experienced outdoors person, it is recommended
you book a guided walk.
It is also important to keep your possessions safe when you are enjoying the National Park. While we are lucky to enjoy relatively
low crime rates this is never guaranteed. We recommend Safer Parking as a secure option for storing your vehicle.
A range of transport operators offer shuttle connections to and from the tracks meaning there are plenty of options should you wish
to leave your vehicle safely in Te Anau.
Ivon Wilson Park 5 minutes
Five minute walk from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. An open 35-hectare park-like
landscape with both introduced and native trees alongside Lake Henry, with views of the
Fiordland mountains. Extensive plantings and many marked trails that crisscross the park make
Ivon Wilson park a great place for families to visit.
Wildlife Centre 10 minutes
Ten minutes from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre on the Te Anau lakefront. View takahe,
kaka, tui, kea, parakeet, waterfowl, pukeko, morepork and wood pigeon with Fiordland mountains
and Lake Te Anau as a backdrop. The takahe is an extremely rare bird that can be viewed at the
Wildlife Park. Endemic to the Fiordland region the takahe was once thought to be extinct and was
rediscovered in a remote valley of the Murchison Mountains by Dr G Orbell.
Visitor Centre to Control Gates 50 minutes
Follow the path to the Wildlife Centre and up the track at the far end through the willow trees. The
path then skirts above the lake to the Control Gates. Excellent lake and mountain views are enjoyed
as the track crosses open land below the golf course. The Control Gates regulate water flows
between lakes Te Anau and Manapouri for the West Arm hydroelectric power station. They mark the
start of the Kepler Track, a 3-4 day walk. A toilet is sited five minutes from the Control Gates on the
track to Dock Bay.
Control Gates to Dock Bay 1 hour return
Thirty minute walk on the first section of the Kepler Track. Starts at the control gates and the
well-defined track follows the lakeshore passing through stands of attractive native forest. A
pleasant bay with views across the lake to Te Anau. Swimming and picnic facilities available.
Control Gates to Brod Bay 3 hours return
Further on from Dock Bay, Brod Bay is another popular spot in summer for boaties and day walkers
alike who enjoy its broad beach and picnic facilities. This is also the drop off point for track
walkers who choose to cut out the first forest section of the Kepler Track.
43
activities www.fiordland.org.nz
Luxmore Hut to Te Anau 4-5 hours
A helicopter can drop you off at Luxmore Hut so you can walk back down the mountain into Te
Anau. There are beautiful views over the Te Anau basin on a nice day. Contact the Fiordland
National Park Visitor Centre for details on helicopter availability and rates. This trip is weather
dependent.

Control Gates to Rainbow Reach 2½hours
The track follows the terraces of the Waiau River through red and mountain beech forest. An area
of manuka shrubland marks the early run holder Jack Beer who during summer drove his sheep
onto Mt Luxmore to graze. There is a swingbridge to cross over the Waiau River to get back to
Rainbow Reach. There is a shuttle bus service back to Te Anau during the summer months.
Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay or Moturau Hut 3½ hours return
Rainbow Reach is 12km from Te Anau on the Manapouri/Te Anau Highway. To access this part of
the Kepler Track cross the swingbridge beside the carpark, then turn left. The track is gently
undulating and wanders through mountain beech forest with some great river views. Some scenes
in the Lord of the Rings movies where filmed near this part of the river. Further along cross a
kettle bog then continue to the shores of Lake Manapouri. The Moturau and Shallow Bay Huts are
near the lake shore and offer shelter and toilet facilities.
manapouri
A 20 minute drive from Te Anau, this area offers either a short loop track with spectacular views of Lake Manapouri and the Hunter
mountains, or one/two night trips in lowland forest and well marked tracks. Access across Waiau River by rowboat or motorboat/
water taxi.
Circle Track 4 hours
A 4 hour circular walk with stunning views over the lake and mountains, variety of vegetation
and good birdlife. Hope Arm Hut/Back Valley Hut - stay over night on the shores of Lake
Manapouri in a 12 bed hut or ina rustic 4 bed hut in the Back Valley.
44
fiordland trade manual 2010/11 activities
The Monument Track 1½-2 hours return
A water taxi or private boat is required to the start of the track, two kilometres north of the
Hope Arm Hut. From here it is a short, but challenging 290 metre climb to The Monument
summit. The track climbs steeply from the beach, through forest onto the ridge before reaching
the bushline. Extreme caution is advised as there are exposed sections with crumbling rock and
narrow ledges.
At one point there is a chain anchored into the rock to help you. From the top there are
spectacular views of Lake Manapouri and the surrounding mountains.
Stockyard Cove Track 45 min-1 hour return
Travel by water taxi or private boat to Stockyard Cove at the western entrance to Hope Arm. Two
tracks lead from this point. The first heads west to West Beach where there are nice views of Lake
Manapouri. The second passes through ancient podocarp forest, climbing briefly until reaching the
high bluff waterfalls and then descending through mountain beech forest to the lake edge. This
track is also know as the Waterfall Track. It is advisable to return to Stockyard Cove following the
same track as the foreshore is rocky, slippery and parts of it can be underwater if the lake level is
high.
Fraser Beach 30 minutes
The views from the beach of the national park are awe-inspiring, especially at sunset. Walk
along the beach, or the track parallel to the beach. The track starts and finishes from Pearl
Harbour or at the road entrance just north of Manapouri township.

The track starts at the Divide carpark and shelter and follows the Routeburn track for about an
hour. It then branches off on a 20-minute climb to Key Summit and panoramic views over the
Humbolt and Darren mountains. Called Key Summit as this is the origin (or Key) to three major
river systems of Otago/Southland, the Hollyford/Eglinton and Waiau, as well as Greenstone-
Clutha Rivers.
Lake Marian falls 20 mins return : lake 3 hours return
The carpark is a kilometre down the unsealed Hollyford Road. From here cross the
swingbridge and continue to the spectacular series of wateralls which are viewed from the
gantry the track becomes steep and sometimes muddy during the 1 hour ascent to Lake
Marian. This beautiful alpine lake is situated in hanging valley surrounded by mountains. You
can see magnificent reflections if the weather is calm.

Humboldt Falls 30 minutes return
This walk starts from the end of the unsealed Hollyford Road. A well graded track takes you on a
short climb through rainforest to the lookout of the impressive Humboldt Falls.
Hidden Falls 4-6 hours return
Leave your car at the Hollyford Road end and cross the swingbridge over Humboldt Creek onto
the Hollyford Track. The track follows the Hollyford river and offers occasional views of the
Darran Mountains. At Hidden Falls Creek the track passes Sunshine Hut, run by Hollyford Valley
Guided Walks, and continues upstream to the swingbridge. Take the rough track to the right of
the bridge to view Hidden Falls. Hidden Falls Hut (12 bunks) is a further 20 minutes along the
track over the bridge.
East Homer Nature Walk 20 minutes return
Located beside the eastern portal of the Homer Tunnel this short self-guided nature walk gives
you an opportunity to learn more about the alpine landscape and how plants and animals survive
here. There are self-guiding cards available - please return them for others to use when you have
completed your walk. Before the tunnel was completed the postman used to climb over the
Homer Saddle here to deliver the mail into Milford Sound. If kea are present please do not feed
them. Please note this walk cannot be accessed if high avalanche danger closess the carpark.
The Chasm 20 minutes return
This walk on the Milford side of the Homer Tunnel is well signposted and very popular. Two foot
bridges over the Cleddau River offer dramatic views of a series of powerful waterfalls. Thousands
of years of swirling water have sculpted shapes and basins in the rock. The sheer velocity of water
gives an appreciation of how much rainfall the Milford Sound area receives per annum.
Kepler Track
The Kepler Track offers vistas of lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, alpine grasslands of the Jackson Peaks, beech forest and U-shaped
glacial valleys. There are three Department of Conservation huts along the track. This well-graded track can be walked in either
direction. A shorter three-day walk option finishes at the swing bridge at Rainbow Reach. It is recommended that the track is walked
in an anti-clockwise direction, allowing a more gradual climb of 1000m through cool beech forest to the bush line. Those with limited
time, experience or fitness may choose to stay only one night in a hut or do a day walk. The walk from Rainbow Reach to Moturau hut
on the shores of Lake Manapouri is particularly suitable for family groups. Two nights at Luxmore Hut makes a nice option in winter
time when the alpine section is often blanketed with snow and there is high avalanche danger.
Dusky Track
The Dusky Track links Lake Hauroko with Lake Manapouri, offers a two-day detour to Supper Cove in Dusky Sound, traverses
three major valley systems and crosses two mountain ranges. There are 21 three-wire bridges on this track and you can expect to
encounter tree falls, deep mud, tree roots and river crossings. Flooding of parts of the track is not unusual and can cause delays
for several days. Rivers rise rapidly. You must take safety equipment with you, i.e. a personal locator beacon (PLB) and a mountain
radio.
Greenstone & Caples Track
The Caples and Greenstone Valleys are linked by the McKellar Saddle, a sub alpine pass, to make a moderate four-five day round
Adventure Walks
fiordland
Adventure Walks offer single or multi-day guided walks with a twist! We combine scenic flights and boat rides to access areas
of Fiordland most people have never set eyes on, let alone set foot in. Our ‘Off the beaten track’ guided walks take in rugged
mountainous scenery, beautiful remote lakes and idyllic camping spots. You are far more likely to come across a wild deer on our
walks than any other hikers and although the areas are remote, the trips are open to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and
a desire to see the untouched, true New Zealand back country. Access to these areas is strictly limited and we feel privileged to be
able to share our love of adventuring here with a select few.
Great value Hollyford Track 2 + 3 day guided walk options also available. All trips can be arranged ex. Queenstown
Hollyford Track - Premiere Three Day Guided Wilderness Adventure : Located in the spectacular Fiordland National Park,
the dramatic Hollyford Track premiere three day guided wilderness adventure is one of New Zealand’s greatest walks. Explore
undisturbed and inspiring scenery that has remained largely untouched for thousands of years, from the snow capped mountains of
the majestic Southern Alps, ancient native rainforest, pristine rivers and lakes to the remote sand dunes, reef and surf of the rugged
West Coast. Your expert guide will bring to life the diversity of landscapes, vegetation and wildlife within this beautiful valley,
as well as the captivating stories of the original Maori and early pioneers. The experiences are just as diverse and include hiking
through ‘World Heritage’ wilderness, native wildlife encounters, wilderness jet-boating, exploring historical sites, and a scenic flight
to Milford Sound. On this 3 day / 2 night all inclusive guided wilderness experience you’ll enjoy cuisine prepared and served by our
friendly lodge hosts while relaxing in our well appointed and comfortable private lodges. A maximum number of 16 people in your
group provides for a personal experience, and with your guide sharing their intimate knowledge of the area with you, it’s a wonderful
way to explore the very essence of New Zealand’s wilderness.
Hollyford Track / Milford Sound - Premiere One Day Guided Heli-Hike Adventure : The exciting ‘Hollyford Track / Milford Sound
– Premier One Day Guided Heli-Hike Adventure’ is one of New Zealand’s greatest guided wilderness experiences. Remote and
dramatic, a journey into the rarely visited Hollyford Valley and world famous Milford Sound is like entering a world that’s remained
largely unchanged for thousands of years. Geologically spectacular and barely touched by man, the sheer diversity of geographical
landforms, vegetation, wildlife, history and heritage in these two areas is truly unparalleled.
Your expert guide will collect you from your Queenstown accommodation and transport you to your helicopter. Departing
Queenstown for a stunning scenic flight to Hollyford Valley, you’ll fly over some of New Zealand’s most breathtaking alpine
scenery. Upon landing, a rewarding walk takes you through a mystical forest to Lake Alabaster and then, via an optional crossing of
Fiordland’s longest swing bridge, you’ll visit Pyke River Lodge for morning tea. A scenic wilderness jet boat ride begins the next part
of your adventure, speeding along the swift clear waters of the Hollyford River and Lake McKerrow with Fiordland’s two highest
peaks of Mt Tutoko and Mt Madeline rising dramatically above. Disembarking on the doorstep of an ancient forest you’ll walk
amongst impressive giant native tress believed to be up to 1500 years old. Soon this towering forest transforms into a tenacious
coastal garden where your helicopter will be waiting to whisk you away for a coastal or alpine lunch before embarking on an amazing
scenic flight along the rugged and isolated coast and into the extraordinary Milford Sound including a ‘highlight’ landing on the
glacial plateau of Mt Tutoko. Flying over more seemingly endless alpine landscapes you’ll return to Queenstown where we will say
farewell and leave you to reflect upon your truly unique ‘once in a life time’ experience.
If there is one experience that delivers the diversity and very essence of New Zealand’s wilderness, it is without a doubt a guided
wilderness adventure in Hollyford Valley and Milford Sound. For a truly unique experience join us on the ‘Hollyford Track / Milford
Sound - Premier One Day Guided Heli-Hike Adventure’.
