The serene deep waters of Lake Te Anau make up the largest lake in the South
Island and are boarded on the Western shore by virgin forest. Across the blue and
silver waters of the lake mountains guard access to some of New Zealand’s most
spectacular scenery. Three long ‘arms’ extend many kilometres into the mountains
on the west, and are also often referred to as inland fiords. These arms once held
glaciers which flowed into one central trough, grinding out what now forms the bed
of Lake Te Anau.
Many locals argue that the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau has scenery to rival that of its
better known coastal cousins, and whether it’s a fishing excursion to troll the lakes
waters for an elusive trout, a water taxi to one of the many beautiful bays and forest
walkways that fringe the lake, or a day or overnight cruise on Lake Te Anau, there is
certainly plenty to explore here.
