There are few lakes more mysterious than Lake Manapouri; brooding, tranquil, tempestuous, serene, glowering, amazing—
all are words that have been used to describe the lake in one of its compelling moods. The otherwordly atmosphere of
sights on and adjacent to the lake were used in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and most visitors will have no problem
imagining orcs and hobbits amidst the dense rainforest as they travel across the lake.
A feature of Lake Manapouri is the number of coves, bays and islands set in astonishingly pure water. Today launches,
yachts and kayaks are regularly seen on the lake, but those who have come to know this extraordinary lake value the
seclusion and pristine atmosphere to be found in the many arms and bays.
