walking Known to New Zealanders as ‘tramping’ the endless hiking and walking opportunities within Fiordland National Park, can be explored independently or as part of a guided group. Walking allows access to towering snow-capped peaks, tussock clad alpine plateaus, rainforest and scenes of dramatic beauty. These tracks offer a sense of freedom and escape seldom found in the world today. With New Zealand’s largest National Park and a World Heritage area, Fiordland has an excellent network of walking tracks giving this area a reputation as the ‘Walking Capital of the World.’ Amongst these are the ‘Great Walks’ the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn Tracks. Te Anau makes a great start and end point for these trips. Walkers can stock up on provisions, and check the weather and track conditions before leaving. With the track complete visitors relish returning to Te Anau to soak weary bones in the spa, buy plasters for sore feet, and revive weary muscles with a massage before reliving their adventure in the warmth and comfort of a local cafe or bar. 40 fiordland trade manual 2010/11 activities In addition to these multi-day tracks there is a range of short walks on diverse terrain, providing walking opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. These walks enable access to the rainforest, lake and alpine vistas for those with limited time or fitness. Weather Fiordland weather is notoriously unpredictable and walkers should be prepared for cold temperatures, strong winds and heavy rain at any time of year. Burning sun can also be a problem at times. It is essential to carry warm and waterproof clothing (even on a day trip), and sunscreen. TRACK CLASSIFICATIONS Great Walks Tracks ‘Great Walks’ is a classification given by Department of Conservation (DOC) that indicates these tracks are well formed and clearly marked and hut facilities are of a high standard. During the summer season (late October - late April) all DOC huts and campsite accommodation on these tracks must be booked in advance. Bookings can be made online www.doc.govt.nz ; or at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau. Tramping Tracks Tramping tracks are marked tracks, with limited track formation. They are suitable for people of average fitness, who are experienced and well equipped. See below for the hut facilities provided. Guided Walks Guided walks (using separate hut facilities) are also available on the Milford, Routeburn, Greenstone, Hump Ridge and Hollyford Tracks. Guided day walks are also available. Local operators are listed in this section. Routes Following a marked route requires a high degree of experience and skill in bush craft and map reading. Trampers should be well equipped and carry the relevant topographical maps. There are numerous routes in Fiordland and some of these are unmarked. For details refer to Moir’s Guide Southern Section, available for sale at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau. Short Walks There are numerous short walks in Fiordland, many of them close to road access such as the Milford Road. For more detailed information on walking opportunities ask staff at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau.
