Against this statement there is a passage contained<br />

in the small treatise attributed to I Ching on the last stanza<br />

of the Vajracchedika (Ta. 1817, p. 783a): here<br />

it is said that Vasubandhu after having explained the<br />

karikas of Maitreya-Asanga again made another explanation<br />

of the prajfid in which its seven topics were<br />

expounded. There is no doubt that the work here alluded<br />

to is the treatise Ta. 1510 (Nj. 1167) attributed by the<br />

current tradition to Asanga and called in Tibetan Don<br />

bdun gyi rgya e'er agrel pa, Saptapadarthatlka;<br />

this corresponds to what we read in the<br />

Chinese translation of the same work: -j^ ^ ^ /pj, Saptapadartha.<br />

In the colophon of the Tibetan translation<br />

the work is said to be by Vasubandhu, slob dpon<br />

dByig giien, mDo, Ma, 203 6. Then the colophon<br />

continues: " There remaining a little portion unfinished<br />

of this new translation made by the all-knowing gZon<br />

nu dpal, the fourth hierarch (cod pan ads'in pa)<br />

of the Zva dmar sect, dPal c'os kyi grags pa ye ses dpal<br />

bzan po in order to fulfil the wish of that excellent master<br />

(r j e), ordered that (that portion) should be translated.<br />

Therefore the 1 o t s a v a of Za hi, C'os skyon of aGos,<br />

in the palace of sNeu gdon rtse, - a great meeting place of<br />

the two Laws, the religious and the civil, - translated it<br />

properly with the support of the powerful king, master<br />

of the Law, (C'os kyi r j e), a king ruling according<br />

to the Law, (C'os kyi rgyal po) dPal nag gi<br />

dban p'yug grags pa, the all - victorious one. The clear<br />

commentary, (explaining) the meaning of the Mother of<br />

the Buddhas of the three times which possesses the name<br />
