companion animal alliance
Among the Foundation’s projects was the collaboration with
animal advocates in forming the Companion Animal Alliance. The CAA is an
independent nonprofit that is dedicated to humane alternatives to euthanasia for the problem
of unwanted dogs and cats. The CAA took over management of the EBR Animal Shelter in
mid-2011. Within just three months, the percentage of dogs and cats saved from certain death
more than tripled, from 20% to 66%. In cooperation with Yelp BR!, Project Purr and Friends
of the Animals, CAA has found homes for thousands of adoptable companion animals. The
Alliance has set a goal of saving 90% of the animals that come through the doors of the shelter.
In light of what they’ve done already, that goal no longer seems audacious; it is now within
reach.
