gifts and grants Donors come to us with a desire to change the world, and we make it easier for them. The Foundation is here to help them give their neighbors a chance to prosper. With a minimum of $10,000, philanthropists can open charitable funds—a donor account for doing good. Donor Advised Funds and Corporate Advised Funds are the most popular, comprising more than 40% of all funds at the Foundation. They allow the donor to recommend grants to nonprofits, which are voted on by the Foundation board, as required by the IRS. To donors, we also offer: 1) Designated Beneficiary Funds, which automatically give to a nonprofit of their choice; 2) Field of Interest Funds, which are dedicated to a particular area of concern, such as education or the arts; and 3) Scholarships to cover tuition and education expenses. The Foundation’s Donor Services department works with donors to open and then oversee charitable accounts, while the Partnership Relations department provides information about nonprofits. Food bank Our donors provided millions to help the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank reach an ambitious goal: $12.1 million to retrofit a warehouse to expand its facilities. The 174,000-square-foot warehouse was donated by Albert Fraenkel and his family through the Foundation at a value of $2.2 million. Facing a ticking clock, the Food Bank raised $10.5 million, including the value of the warehouse, to secure a challenge grant of $1.2 million from the Kresghe Foundation. The Food Bank expects to be in its warehouse later this year. Among other things, the facility will let the nonprofit repackage bulk food in a “clean room” to sizes fit for families and buy larger amounts at lower prices and divide the purchases with other food pantries for the hungry. (In 2011, the Foundation and our donors granted $293,580 to the Food Bank.) Opening Doors Innovations coupled with an understanding of community needs is the trademark of Opening Doors, a nonprofit that was born from St. John’s United Methodist Church to serve children in the dangerous Gardere Lane neighborhoods. Opening Doors, for instance, offers points to parents who support their children at the Charlie Thomas Head Start program. That program has grown to more than 120 children in 2011 from 19 when it began in 2002. In December, parents trade their points for clothes and toys on their children’s wish lists. Another program offers a party as an incentive for middle school children to take the LEAP tests, while summer camps ensure that children are prepared for the upcoming school year. (The Powell Group Fund at the Foundation granted $2,000 to Opening Doors in 2011.) 45
