Alzheimer’s Services Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area teamed with other nonprofits to care for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, who sometimes have been abandoned by family members or have weak family structures. ASCA also created Memory Café in 2011 for group counseling of people with early onset Alzheimer’s. (Grants by Credit Bureau of Baton Rouge, a supporting organization of the Foundation, to this organization was $12,442. gifts and grants Asparagus Club Scholarship The Asparagus Club scholarships at the Baton Rouge Area Foundation are partly responsible for well-run neighborhood groceries. Affiliated with the National Grocers Association, the Asparagus Club was created in 1909 to generate a spirit of cooperation among members of the grocery industry. To improve the industry, the Club began offering scholarships to students who wanted careers in the industry, particularly those wishing to work at independent grocers or wholesalers. The Club’s scholarship program is among 16 scholarships managed by the Foundation. Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans In 2011, the Gulf Coast Restoration and Protection Foundation, a supporting organization of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, granted $18 million to nonprofits to benefit the people, wildlife and ecology of the Gulf Coast. Among the grantees were Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans, which received $15 million to serve residents in communities recovering from the oil leak. BP donated $100 million after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill for grants to workers on deepwater rigs and those directly supporting the deepwater rigs, which were told to stop drilling by the federal government. The Foundation met the demand from the deepwater rig employees with about $12 million and is granting the rest to nonprofits that are working on behalf of the coast. We expect all the funds to be granted over the next two years. Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation has some new wheels for its eventual new home. With gifts from Foundation donors and others who share its vision, the Speech and Hearing Foundation is building a $7 million, 26,000-square-foot headquarters at LSU’s South Campus on GSRI Road. At the center, which is two-and-a-half times the size of the current facility, the nonprofit will provide therapy to more autistic patients, regardless of their ability to pay. What’s more, the organization has added mobile services that will offer services to rural communities, reaching a population that is often underserved with social services. (Donors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation gave $37,084 to BR Speech and Hearing Foundation in 2011.) Academic Distinction Fund class projects Through an endowment managed by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, the Academic Distinction Fund makes grants to support East Baton Rouge public schools. Many of the grants underwrite direct projects by teachers. Teacher projects in 2011 included Scope On A Rope, in which school students used LSU’s digital microscopes to study the details of nature; and Project Learning Tree, which followed a national curriculum to teach about trees, including students creating models to understand how seasons impact tree growth and development. (Grants from the ADF endowed fund at the Foundation totaled $219,234.) 47
