from the chair Matthew G. McKay, Chairman of the Board During 2011, the Foundation was immersed in issues concerning water. That’s appropriate, considering we live in Louisiana, where the differences between land and water are not always distinct. First, there was the $100 million granted to us by BP in 2010 for helping deepwater rig workers following the oil spill disaster. The Foundation paid out two rounds of grants to rig workers and those who supported the drillers, with about $80 million remaining in a fund to benefit the Gulf Coast. After assisting those deepwater rig workers impacted by the moratorium, we discovered what the oil industry already knew. Oil companies valued their skilled workers, retaining them to improve the rigs during the drilling halt. What’s especially encouraging is that 80% of these prized employees are Louisiana residents. Under terms of the act of donation, what’s left of the money is being granted to nonprofits that are working to benefit the people, wildlife and ecology of the Gulf Coast. The BP oil spill was an abrupt and unexpected blow for the region, and recovery is ongoing. But there is a larger, more ominous threat to our precious coastlands that we must confront. Rising seas and subsiding land, both in Louisiana and in other river deltas, are causing the loss of entire coastal communities. The persistent erosion of our coastline may not be a sudden, shocking disaster like the oil spill, but its consequences are ultimately far more devastating, displacing not only our neighbors but eventually requiring billions upon billions of dollars in infrastructure. In December of 2011, we culminated nearly two years of work by convening the first official meeting of The Water Institute of the Gulf—a research resource that we believe will emerge as a leading world authority for the science and solutions of managing deltaic areas threatened by rising waters and subsiding land. One of our most ambitious civic leadership projects, The Water Institute has begun its work in 2012. Our economist friends tell us that the Institute could spin off thousands of related jobs over the next 10 to 20 years. What’s more, Louisiana can proudly show the world that it is home to this forward-thinking knowledge enterprise. The Foundation’s staff couldn’t do this work—and the other efforts detailed within this annual report—without our fund donors and members. As you may know, fund donors provide most of the funding for grants. Meanwhile, members are our advocates and underwriters for civic leadership initiatives, such as The Water Institute. Looking back on 2011, we expressedly thank our fund donors and members. Because of you, more than 1.5 million people living across South Louisiana are able to overcome the challenges that confront their communities—making each year a little better than the one before. 5
