Jenneke Bateman-Korteweg Nominated by Mandy Press Born in 1950 in The Hague, the Netherlands. A teenager in the swinging 60s, Jenneke arrived in Australia with her husband in 1970, seven months pregnant with her first child, Brent. She had no family or friends to support her but relished the opportunity to get to know her new country and community. In 1973, she moved to Research, with Brent and her second child, daughter Kim. Jenneke soon discovered that there was nothing in the area for young mothers at home with their children. They expressed a real need for flexible occasional care. There were many women at home caring for young children, with absent fathers working long hours outside the home. These women were often isolated, had no transport and often had very little else other than their large and lovely homes in the bush. Jenneke worked with Mary Robertson, the Family Day Care coordinator at Eltham Shire Council, to establish a network of occasional care. When the Council wanted to demolish a derelict building in Eltham Lower Park, these strong community activists staked their claim. Despite fierce competition from the Eltham Rugby Club who wanted it for their club rooms, their commitment and charm won it for occasional care. The Hohnes Road Playhouse opened in 1975. It was named the Playhouse by daughter Kim, to differentiate between her houses (her house in Research). Between Jenneke and her friend Sue Webb, they could care for eight children. Priority was given to participants of the Eltham Living & Learning Centre. The Playhouse was a roaring success. It became a catalyst for children’s service development in the Shire. Jenneke became a member of the Eltham Arts Council, and administered the Eltham Art Awards for Council from 1985-1995. The Art in Public Places biennial sculpture award became her baby (and soapbox - she could be a fierce force in protecting her beloved arts!). In 1989, Jenneke married local artist Piers Bateman, moved to St Andrews and had her third child, William. Still finding need, she established Arts Focus funds programs – at the local primary school and later at Eltham High – to support students to participate in and appreciate the arts. A few years ago, she set up a writing group at Alwood House and recently, the writing group at the new U3A in Hurstbridge. Her latest project – calling all knitters to make squares, resulted in a stunning array of patchwork rugs to warm and comfort survivors of Black Saturday. Jenneke’s activism, charm, generosity, enthusiasm, and commitment to community have characterised her contribution in the decades after her arrival in the area as a young woman. She sees herself as a modern pioneer. She loved making her way in a new country. It was an adventure for her and she is still enjoying the challenges.
Amy Bryans Nominated by Geraldine Sanderson Although still young, Amy has made a significant contribution to Catholic Ladies College. She is a strong advocate for giving youth a voice and does this by her willingness to speak out at school on a variety of topics. She encourages other students - both peers and those younger than her - to take an active role in having their say. Her articulate manner and engaging presence help to give her ideas impact. Younger students look up to Amy as a role model who is comfortable being out-there, voicing her ideas on youth, social justice and global issues. Amy uses drama and improvisation as a vehicle for engaging others and inspiring both young and old that the voice of youth has a great deal to offer!
