AndreiSakharovjoinedaresearchgroupin1948thatwasassignedtobuildnuclearweapons.In 1953,theyinventedtheSovietHbombanduntil1962,theirworkwasusedtodesignandbuildall nucleararms.Yet,Sakharovbegantobeconcernedwiththeimplicationshisworkhadonthefuture ofhumanityandhetriedtoalertotherstothedangerofthenucleararmsrace.Hiseffortswerepaidoff inpartwiththesigningoftheNuclearNon-ProliferationTreatyin1968.Inthe70s,Sakharovcreated acommitteeforthedefenseofhumanrightsandthedefenseofthevictimsofpoliticaltrials.These effortswouldearnhimtheNobelPeacePrizein1975.FollowinghiscriticismofSovietleadersin1979, Sakharovwasrelievedofhisprivilegesanddemote.HewassenttointernalexileinthecityofGorky andkeptundertightKGBsurveillancefrom1980to1986.Hewasinitiallydemotedthenbanished becausehebrazenlychallengedtheliesanddefiedthedictatorship.Arebelallhislife,Sakharov wasafearlesshumanrightsactivist(hewasamongthefirsttodenouncetheSovietAfghanWar),and adefenderofpersonalfreedoms.Hisscientificandpoliticalcontributionshaveearnedhimaplacein the20-centuryhistorybooks,bothinRussiaandthroughouttheworld.TotellSakharov'sstoryisto drawclosertothelifeofarighteousman,whoismournedwithabitterconscienceinhiscountry.It alsoprovidesperspectiveoncurrenteventsinRussiaandChechnya,andunderscoreshisstruggles.
