<strong>Flag</strong> <strong>Football</strong><br />

Grades 8/9/10<br />

Learning Outcomes – Students will be able to:<br />

1) Understand basic rules and field dimensions<br />

2) Identify, describe and demonstrate player positions<br />

3) Identify playing techniques, penalties and strategies<br />

4) Demonstrate basic skills including passing, receiving and running patterns<br />

Rules<br />

Field dimension –60 - 80 by 20 - 30 yards. End zone 10 yards deep.<br />

Downs within 5 yards of end zone may not execute running plays.<br />

Coin toss determines choice of possession and zone to defend.<br />

All changes of possessions except interceptions have offensive team starting<br />

at their own 5-yard line.<br />

Teams have 3 downs (starting at their own 5 yard line) to cross centre and 3<br />

more downs or plays to score a touchdown. A touchdown is 6 pts. Kicked<br />

convert 1 pt. 2point conversion is at played the 12-yard line. (Interception<br />

return results in 2 pts. to the defensive team and possession at their own 5-<br />

yard line.<br />

Only players 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage may rush the passer.<br />

The passer (quarterback) has 7 seconds to release the ball or lose the down.<br />

The passer may not run over the line of scrimmage.<br />

Players lined up on the line of scrimmage may only rush once the passer has<br />

released the ball.<br />

All defensive penalties are 5 yards and automatic first down unless otherwise<br />

noted. Exception pass interference which is 15-yards. All penalties can be<br />

declined. Penalty examples – offside, illegal flag pull, illegal contact, illegal<br />

rush.<br />

Most offensive penalties result in loss of down and a 5-yard penalty. Penalty<br />

examples – false start, illegal snap, illegal forward pass, flag guarding.<br />

Individual pass patterns<br />

5-yard curl – wide receiver runs up 5 yards and curls to QB.<br />

5-yard out – wide receiver runs up 5 yards and cuts to the sideline.<br />

8-yard post –wide receiver runs up 8 yards and cuts on a 45-dgree angel.<br />

Streak- wide receiver runs straight up field as fast as possible.

Position Descriptions<br />

Quarterback – Captain on offence. Calls all plays and is the leader of the<br />

offence. Stands behind the centre and receives the snap to start the play.<br />

Has the option to pass or hand off. Quarterback may not run. Has 7 seconds to<br />

throw the ball.<br />

Center - The center snaps the ball between the legs and then may block or<br />

run out for a pass.<br />

Wide Receiver – Responsible for catching passes and running with the ball.<br />

There up to three wide receivers on offence.<br />

Running Back – The running back stands behind or next to the QB. The running<br />

back is responsible for receiving hand-offs and receiving passes from the QB.<br />

Defensive Back – The DB is responsible for stopping players on offence by<br />

trying intercept passes or preventing offensive yardage by pulling the player’s<br />

flag.
