PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
PROVINCIAL EXAM PREPARATIONS
There are a number of provincially examinable courses that students take in Grades 10, 11 and
12 that lead to graduation. Grade 10 and 11 Provincial Exams make up 20% of the final mark,
while Grade 12 Provincial Exams are 40% of the final mark. Students and parents should make
note of the attached June Provincial Exam Schedule. As we approach the end of the semester,
students writing Provincial Exams should begin to plan for this significant assessment. The
school will provide extra support for students writing these exams through the following
initiatives:

• May 29 th (Friday) - Workshops have been arranged for student writing Provincial
Exams. The workshops will be held during the day and all students are expected to
attend these sessions.
• June 1 st (Monday) and June 2 nd (Tuesday) - Mock Provincial Exams will
be written on these days. Teachers will mark the exams and provide valuable feedback
to students in preparation for the exams being written later in the month. Also, the block
order has been changed on these two days: June 1 st (Monday) will be 1/1/3/3 and June
2 nd (Tuesday) will be 2/2/4/4.
FINAL EXAMS SCHEDULE
The final exam schedule is advertised in this newsletter and students and parents should be
advised that students are expected to write final exams on the day and time that is scheduled.
There will be no exceptions.
SCHOOL CALENDAR
Attached to this newsletter is our school calendar for 2009/2010. Our schedule will continue to
be fixed so that we can develop routines for students and staff, and students will again be
dismissed early on Friday afternoons. However, in order to comply with Ministry Regulations
and Collective Agreements, the bell schedule will need to change slightly next year. Students
will be dismissed at 2:40 p.m. Monday through Thursday and dismissed at 2:00 p.m. on Fridays.
The Board of Education has also approved our request for an altered calendar next year. This
gives our teachers an opportunity to have collaborative time spread out throughout the year and
they are not expected to attend school on two non-instructional days next year: October 9 th and
May 21 st .
SCHOOL GROWTH PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR
As indicated in our last newsletter, the School Planning Council is continuing to develop the
School Growth Plan for 2009/2010. Once again, here is a summary of targets that have been
determined for next year:
Transitions Goal #1 - Grade to Grade
TARGET – The pass rate for all students taking courses in all grades will reach 96%.
TARGET – The Honours rate (A & B marks) for all students taking courses in all grades
will reach 55%.
Transitions Goal #2 – Students to Post-Secondary
This will again be a planning year as we develop targets and strategies
designed to improve our post-secondary transitions rates.
I would also like to thank the following members of the School Planning Council for helping us
develop the School Growth Plan:
CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. TOMLINSON
This past month we learned that Ms. Dawne Tomlinson has been promoted to be the new
Principal of Langley Secondary School, and she will begin her new position over the summer.
We are thankful to Ms. Tomlinson for providing outstanding leadership over the past two years,
and she will be missed by all of the R.E. Mountain School community. Replacing Ms.
SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER
Cst. Vonna Fitzgerald is our School Liaison Officer. She is available to parents, staff and
students on a drop-in or appointment basis.
STUDENT ABSENCE
Parents can now take advantage of our ‘absence line’. You can call in any time and leave the
information on the absence line. Please call if your child is going to be away for the day, part of
the day or tardy. 604-888-3033. Choose option 1. Please leave the date, name of student and
reason for being absent.
LIBRARY
From the Library: HELP! HELP! Parents, please remind students to bring
back library books and texts once they're finished with them. We have
other students waiting to read the library books and we are sometimes short
of texts if students finish the semester and don't return them. The books are
often buried in lockers or under beds at home.
The end of the year has consequences for those with lost books and
outstanding office fees- the yearbook is withheld, transcripts are withheld
for moving students, grade 12 graduation celebration is withheld, and next
year's texts are withheld for returning students. If this seems rather drastic come in sometime
and see our lists of students with missing library books and text books - it will cost the school
thousands of dollars if we don't get them back!
This is especially a problem when students are leaving the school for another school outside of
our district. Parents/home-stay parents - you have the final responsibility for making sure texts
that are in your home are returned to the school if your student has left the house. Believe it or
not, parents have thrown texts away or taken them to thrift stores. Some of our texts are worth
$160 each. PLEASE WORK WITH US!!
Many thanks to the parents who come in here with arms full of books - it is appreciated!

SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARYS
Are you able to support the post-secondary education of R.E. Mountain Secondary School
students? As the cost of post-secondary education is rising, we count on our community to provide
much needed support for the continued success of our students. If you run a business or are part of
a company that could offer a scholarship or bursary for graduating students we would love to hear
from you. Any donation is welcome. If you are able to contribute please contact our principal Dave
Michel at 604-888-3033 for more information.
REMINDER TO PARENTS
When you drop off items or lunches for your student at the office, please make sure the
student’s name is
on them. Items get lost easily when there is no name on a
lunch or item left at the office.
Do you need to take your student out of class some days? Please make sure your son or
daughter has a note to show the teacher in order to get out of the classroom and also call the
office to ensure we update the attendance to show an excused absence.
PAC ELECTIONS FOR 2009/10 SCHOOL YEAR
SEPTEMBER 28th, 2009. The following positions are declared open: President, Vice-
President, Secretary, Treasurer, DPAC Rep, School Planning Council (3) and Members at
Large (3). It is imperative that these positions be filled in order that students and the school can
REMSS community will consider participating on the executive. Meetings are held once a
month, excluding December and June. For more information, please contact PAC President
Karen Leach at karenpac@shaw.ca or come out to a meeting and bring your questions and
A Message from you R.E. Mountain PAC regarding R.E. Mountain Secondary
SchoolExpansion.
Did you know that:
• Despite declining provincial enrolment, R.E. Mountain enrolment has been growing
steadily and will continue to grow?
• The Langley School District has received assurances from the Ministry of Education that
facility needs in the rapidly growing Willoughby area will be given priority in coming
rounds of the Ministry’s capital grants approval process?
• R.E. Mountain is built for 725 students, but currently has more than 900?
• In the last two years, 500 students have been added to the Willoughby community?
• There are no spaces in other schools for Mountain students?
• Mountain currently has eight portables, with additional portables planned to meet preexpansion
growth needs?
• Mountain is designed to facilitate its expansion and two Langley schools with the same
plan have already been successfully expanded?
Given these facts, your school PAC feels it is important to ensure that the Provincial
Government and the Langley Board of Education remain aware that R.E. Mountain expansion
needs must be considered a high priority in their planning processes.
If you would like to help ensure the Provincial Government and the Langley Board of Education
continue to recognize R.E. Mountain expansion as a high priority, please consider sending a
letter via email to School Board chair, Joan Bech, and MLA(s) Rich Coleman and/or Minister
Mary Polak. R.E. Mountain is in MLA Coleman’s electoral area, but some of the school’s
catchment area (south of 72 nd ) is in Minister Polak’s area. The letters require only that you add
your signature and identify yourself appropriately as either the “parent” or “guardian” of an R.E.
Mountain student. The email addresses are contained in the letters. If you have any questions
about how to forward the letters, please contact Karen Leach - karenpac@shaw.ca
If you would like your letter to be part of the letter-count your PAC will keep to track interest in
this issue, please copy PAC President Karen Leach at karenpac@shaw.ca when you send your
letter(s).
*find the letters you can email on our website under March newsletter

New Food Experiences
Trying new fruits and vegetables is a great way to get kids interested in the foods they eat and
can be a fun experience for the whole family. Try zucchini, blackberries, apricots or cherries. To
enhance your child’s food experience:
• Take kids to the grocery store and let them help choose fruits and vegetables.
• If you have a u-pick farm, garden or berry bush near by, pick the food together. Your
child will learn how different foods grow.
• Serve the new food when your child is hungry, they will be more likely to try it.
• Don’t force a child to taste the food. Keep the experience positive.
• Talk about the new food with your kids. Together describe the taste, smell, colour,
shape and the sound it makes when it is eaten.
Let your kids try new foods with friends. They will likely try it if they see others around them
eating it too.
Public Health Nutrition Program
Skin Protection
Sun Smart Tips:
• Apply sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher, 30 minutes before going in the sun
• Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming
• Wear a hat and sunglasses
• Avoid the sun between 10am and 4pm.
Protection from Mosquitoes:
• Use insect repellents that are registered in Canada and contain Deet
• Deet in repellents should not exceed 30% for adults or 10% for children
• Do not use insect repellent in children under 2 years of age.
