Al-Iraqiya had insisted on its right to lead the future government having come a narrow
first in the March 7 elections, but after eight months of political maneuvering and
intense negotiations, the bloc agreed to relinquish its claim on the premiership in
exchange for the aforementioned council.
It was reported that the newly established council will be responsible for drafting
domestic, foreign, economic and security policies as well as influencing oil, gas and
energy policies and dealing with a host of other issues. (AK News)
The KBC demanded, on Sunday, of finding a new mechanism for calculating the points of
the prime minister and for the president of the Republic, rejecting the mechanism
proposed by the National Coalition (NC) which calculates equal points for Talabani and
al-Maliki.
Mahmoud Othman, leader in KBC, told AKnews, that the KBC is not convinced of this
mechanism, and will call for modifying it during the coming meetings, for the powers of
the prime minister is large and active and cannot be compared with the limited powers
of the president of the republic.
The Iraqiya List has announced yesterday, its rejection for the mechanism adopted for
calculating the points for the Prime Minister, and demanded that the prime minister
points must be equal to the double points of the parliament speaker. (AK News)
A deputy form the Gorran (Change) Movement said for cabinet formation talks his party
will negotiate with the assigned Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as an independent
Kurdish party, stressing that Gorran demands two ministries.
