attractions is museums and there are six museums in the<br />
local area with four located in <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong><br />
- affectionately known as the museum capital <strong>of</strong> Australia!<br />
Whether you are interested in planes, trains, maritime<br />
history, toys or household and farming memorabilia, you’ll<br />
be sure to find something to suit everybody.<br />

Check it out!<br />
• The Big Wheel thought to be the largest Flywheel in South<br />
Australia, 20 feet in diameter, weighing 15 tonnes with a 17<br />
tonne Compressor, both used to generate refrigeration at the<br />
Gepps Cross Abattoirs for 60 years from 1924 to 1984, along<br />
with many other exhibits from the Abattoirs.<br />
• Exhibits displaying life from 1880’s to recent times including:<br />
Farming - wagons, carts, reaper, winnower, ploughs, tools,<br />
1 tonne butter churn, blacksmith, harness, seed grader pickler.<br />
Household - items, wash tubs, early electric washer/mangle, ice<br />
chests, kero stove and lamps, corner store, typewriters, bicycles.<br />
Video - <strong>of</strong> first flight from England to Australia in 1919 by Sir<br />
Ross & Sir Keith Smith in a Vickers Vimy aircraft is also displayed.<br />
Did you know?<br />
• <strong>Enfield</strong> & Districts Historical Society Inc. operated from 1982 to<br />
2012, established the <strong>Enfield</strong> Heritage <strong>Museum</strong> in 1995 within the<br />
4 ½ acres <strong>of</strong> Historic Sunnybrae Farm, Regency Park.<br />
• The Managers Residence, Cow Shed, Stables, Piggeries,<br />
Smoke House, Cheese Room, Machinery Shed, were restored<br />
1986-1993 and currently used both as a museum and function<br />
centre for weddings, conferences and seminars, within the<br />
magnificent grounds, rose garden and wisteria arch.<br />

The National Railway <strong>Museum</strong> is Australia’s number one<br />
railway attraction, located next to the <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong><br />
State Heritage Area.<br />
Check it out!<br />
• One <strong>of</strong> the largest under-cover collections <strong>of</strong> heritage<br />
locomotives, passenger carriages, freight vehicles and rail<br />
memorabilia in Australia.<br />
• Ask the butcher in the “Tea and Sugar” train Butchers Van,<br />
questions about the history and operation <strong>of</strong> the train on the<br />
interactive display.<br />
• Jump aboard the train from Callington Station for a trip around<br />
the museum!<br />
Did you know?<br />
• The National Railway <strong>Museum</strong> is located on the site <strong>of</strong> the<br />
historic <strong>Port</strong> Dock Station, the first government owned and<br />
built steam railway in the British Empire. It opened in 1856<br />
between <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong> and <strong>Adelaide</strong> then closed in 1963.<br />
• The National Railway <strong>Museum</strong> was previously known as The<br />
<strong>Port</strong> Dock Station Railway <strong>Museum</strong>.<br />
• Some <strong>of</strong> the museum's rolling stock is stored in the original<br />
<strong>Port</strong> Dock Goods Shed, which was built in1873<br />
• The museum operates the Semaphore to Fort Glanville Tourist<br />
Railway on weekends, public holidays and daily during school<br />
holidays from September until April (weather permitting).<br />
Trains depart between 11am and 4pm at frequencies according<br />
to demand.<br />

The late Keith Le Leu, the Austbuilt Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>’s<br />
original owner donated the museum to the <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong><br />
Historical Society in 2004. The museum is a “work in<br />
progress” with the society’s members working diligently<br />
to develop themed displays for its vast maritime<br />
collection.<br />

• The huge collection <strong>of</strong> rare and unusual shipping<br />
memorabilia and artifacts.<br />
• Ships’ bells and more than 80 lifebuoys.<br />
• Have a tugboat experience on land by climbing into the<br />
wheelhouse <strong>of</strong> the Tancred which was built by American<br />
women in World War 2!<br />
• Examine the fascinating detail <strong>of</strong> the museum’s model ships.<br />
Did you know?<br />
• This is the oldest maritime museum in South Australia!<br />
Initiated in 1964 by the late Keith Le Leu who was a wellknown<br />
<strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong> identity.<br />
• Keith was an enthusiastic collector <strong>of</strong> maritime memorabilia and<br />
passionate about preserving the history <strong>of</strong> Australian-built ships.<br />
• The <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong> Historical Society can arrange guided bus<br />
tours <strong>of</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong> and coastal areas, including the museum<br />

The South Australian Aviation <strong>Museum</strong> displays Australia’s<br />
aviation heritage, with a collection <strong>of</strong> 12 aircraft and<br />
other aviation related memorabilia.<br />

• 14 Aircraft on display ranging from the Arvo Anson trainer to<br />
the huge Navy Westland Wessex Helicopter.<br />
• The Douglas C-47B Dakota (A65-114), which was used by the<br />
RAAF from 1945 as a VIP aircraft.<br />
• Various rockets fired from the Woomera Rocket Range.<br />
• Displays <strong>of</strong> South Australia’s aviation history.<br />
• Engine running days, where the public can view the aircraft<br />
engines in action.<br />
Did you know?<br />
• In January 2000 the museum was awarded full accreditation<br />
by the History Trust <strong>of</strong> South Australia.<br />
• The museum has relocated over the years with its collection<br />
being housed initially at Glenelg, then various locations in<br />
<strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong>, including the old “<strong>SA</strong> Lion” Flourmill in Mundy<br />
Street, Ocean Steamers Road / Honey Street aircraft hangar<br />
and finally the purpose-built premises in Lipson Street.<br />

• Climb the spiral staircase <strong>of</strong> the lighthouse, or view the floating<br />
collection <strong>of</strong> boats at the <strong>Port</strong>.<br />
Did you know?<br />
• The main gallery <strong>of</strong> the museum is located in the Bond stores<br />
<strong>of</strong> Lipson Street, which were built during the 1850’s.<br />
• The Lighthouse was first located on the <strong>Port</strong> River in 1869<br />
and was then moved to South Neptune Island in 1901. It was<br />
restored and moved back to the <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong> Black Diamond<br />
Square in 1986.<br />
• The museum <strong>of</strong>fers fun activities for children during<br />
school holidays.<br />

collection <strong>of</strong> Australian manufactured toys, dating back<br />
to the 1880’s.<br />

to Year 12, featuring many toys for hands on engagement.<br />
History, civics, science, music, arts, play and games.<br />
• Youth or church group functions <strong>of</strong> fun and games catered for<br />

• The museum also caters to community and groups with<br />
demonstrations and displays <strong>of</strong> toys and games from the<br />
past as well as showing the contribution children have made<br />
throughout Australia's history.<br />
Did you know?<br />
• The Australian <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> Childhood is located in the old<br />
school hall next to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which opened in<br />
1858. The school hall was built in 1869.<br />
• The school was run by one <strong>of</strong> South Australia’s early pioneers<br />
<strong>of</strong> education, Sister Mary Mackillop, and the Josephite nuns.<br />
• Sister Mary Mackillop was canonised in 2010 and is the only<br />
Australian to be recognised by the Roman Catholic Church<br />
as a saint.<br />
