New section members wanted<br />

This is the first public annOWlcement of<br />

a new Section on Beam Plasma and<br />

Inertial Fusion Physics (BPIFP) to be<br />

founded with<strong>in</strong> the EPS Plasma Physics<br />

Division. The <strong>in</strong>centive orig<strong>in</strong>ates from a<br />

wide-spread feel<strong>in</strong>g that the division should<br />

broaden its scientific scope and put more<br />

attention to those areas of plasma physics<br />

which have strongly developed recently<br />

without be<strong>in</strong>g rooted <strong>in</strong>the division.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g the creation of a Section on<br />

Dusty and Colloidal Plasmas <strong>in</strong> 2000, the<br />

BPIFP section responds to the rapid<br />

growth <strong>in</strong> dense plasma research with<br />

high power beams, <strong>in</strong> particular laser and<br />

ion beams. A large laser plasma community<br />

has evolved <strong>in</strong> Europe over the last 40<br />

years with applications to Inertial Conf<strong>in</strong>ement<br />

Fusion (ICF) as a major driv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

force. With ICF ignition facilities now<br />

Wlder construction <strong>in</strong> France and USA,<br />

the physics of<strong>in</strong>ertial fusion will be a central<br />

topic of BPIFP activities, and this<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes heavy ion beams and correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dense plasma research with<br />

nanosecond pulses.<br />

Particular new drive for the BPIFP section<br />

stems from the recent success <strong>in</strong><br />

produc<strong>in</strong>g ultrashort terawatt laser pulses<br />

<strong>in</strong> the range of femtoseconds, even with<br />

table-top devices. At focussed <strong>in</strong>tensities,<br />

these pulses open a new branch of relativistic<br />

plasma physics with applications to<br />

ultrashort ultrabright X-ray sources<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g plasma X-ray lasers, to plasmabased<br />

high-gradient accelerators, to<br />

nuclear and particle physics, and also to<br />

<strong>in</strong>ertial fusion. The <strong>in</strong>terface with relativistic<br />

astrophysics (cosmic jets, etc.) will<br />

become important.<br />

Beam plasma effects also f<strong>in</strong>d grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the context of conventional<br />

accelerators and Free Electron Lasers<br />

(FEL). X-ray FELs now Wlder construction<br />

at DESY <strong>in</strong> Hamburg and at SLAC <strong>in</strong><br />

Stanford will generate 100 fs, keY, terawatt<br />

X-ray pulses which will produce soliddensity<br />

plasmas up to keY temperatures<br />

and Gbar pressures. Also, laser electron<br />

and ion sources as well as applications to<br />

ion implantation are now developed at<br />

several places.<br />

The BPIFP section will serve as a general<br />

forum for beam plasma physics with<strong>in</strong><br />

EPS and to foster <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary plasma<br />

research <strong>in</strong> these new fields. Itwill care for<br />

adequate presentation at EPS conferences<br />

and organize topical meet<strong>in</strong>gs, first of all<br />

with<strong>in</strong> EPS structures. The <strong>in</strong>tention is to<br />

do this without <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the number of<br />

conferences, butrather to better coord<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g conference and workshop series<br />

and to merge them from time to time.<br />

Ofcourse, this requires the support ofthe<br />

groups and <strong>in</strong>stitutions work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this field<br />

<strong>in</strong> Europe. The plans to create the BPIFP section<br />

are presently discussed among scientists<br />

from different European COWltries. All those<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested to jo<strong>in</strong> this discussion shouldwrite<br />

first meet<strong>in</strong>g of the BPIFP <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>g group<br />

will take place on Monday, 18 June 2001,<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the EPS Conference on Controlled<br />

Fusion and Plasma Physics at Madeira<br />
