Physics and Astronomy Society (LUPAS)
Here is a note from physics
undergraduates James Cornish and Karl
Ramwell on behalf of LUPAS :
PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
SOCIETY
LUPAS is one of the most active and
largest societies on campus. Whether
we’re off having paintball battles,
taking on the staff at football or giving
talks on the latest developments in
physics there is always something
fascinating going on! If you decide to
study physics at Lancaster you will be
automatically enrolled free of charge
into the society for your entire time
with us.
Structure
LUPAS is a member of NEXUS, which is
the student-run branch of the Institute
of Physics (IOP). It is run by a group of
six students elected annually by you.
Any member of the society can stand
for election and it is a great society to
get involved in. LUPAS is also a member
of Lancaster University Science &
Technology Societies Association which
provides all society members with
opportunities to explore and meet other
science subject societies.
Ape, taking on the challenge of our
infamous Do You Dare social, or getting
dressed up in your best finery for our
Annual Winter Ball there is always
something exciting going on. In
addition LUPAS, in conjunction with the
IOP, runs many talks at Lancaster
University and other local institutions
featuring guest lectures on a multitude
of different physics themes which are
not to be missed!
Projects
As a new addition to LUPAS, each year
students will have an opportunity to
undertake an extended project in
Michaelmas (autumn) and Lent (spring)
terms. It could be anything from
looking at variable stars using one of
the two Faulkes telescopes, to studying
muon decays with a weather balloon.
As a team you will solve real physical
problems and actually get a chance to
get your hands dirty.
