Student finance
The two main costs you will incur at
University are tuition fees and living
expenses. The following information
details these costs and gives
information on the Government and
University help available towards each.
Tuition fee costs: (UK/EU nationals)
The tuition fee for all new UK/EU
nationals starting full time
undergraduate courses in 2011 will be
£3290* (subject to inflation).
Tuition fee assistance – UK
Government Tuition Fee Loan
(UK/EU nationals)
UK/EU undergraduate students do not
have to pay any tuition fees up-front
while they are studying. Instead they
will be able to defer payment of their
tuition fees by taking out a non-means
tested tuition fee loan to cover the fee
charged. The amount borrowed is paid
directly to the University by the Student
Loan Company (SLC). If a student
chooses to borrow less than the full
tuition fee amount charged they are
responsible to the University for paying
the difference between the amount
borrowed and the tuition fee charged.
Living expenses
We estimate annual living costs for a
single undergraduate student to be
£6,500 - £9000 per annum. For details
Assistance with living expenses - UK
Government Loans/Grants (UK
nationals only)
Student living cost loan:
UK undergraduate students are usually
entitled to a student living cost loan.
The level of loan depends on annual
financial assessment. If you have to
study abroad as part of your course the
student loan for the year spent abroad
is higher.
Higher Education Maintenance
Grant (HEMG):
A grant (non-repayable) of up to
£2906* will be payable to students
where household residual income is
below £25,000*. The grant will be
reduced on a sliding scale until income
reaches approximately £50,020* where
no grant will be payable. Students
receiving a HEMG above a certain level
will lose a small amount of student loan
borrowing entitlement.
Other grants:
There are a range of other grants for
students with child or adult dependants.
