The physical and mental stresses endured on <strong>the</strong> job and left untreated can lead to:<br />
! Chronic, non-specific debilitat<strong>in</strong>g conditions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g back and neck stra<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
headaches and migra<strong>in</strong>es, high blood pressure (lead<strong>in</strong>g to o<strong>the</strong>r chronic diseases such<br />
as stroke),<br />
! Cancers<br />
! The practice of unsafe and behaviours executed as stress relievers; such as smok<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>in</strong>creased alcohol <strong>in</strong>take and unprotected sex, which <strong>in</strong> turn can lead to o<strong>the</strong>r chronic<br />
illnesses such as alcoholism, <strong>HIV</strong>, lung disease and cancers.<br />
Overall, <strong>the</strong>se illnesses and risk behaviours can result <strong>in</strong> lowered productivity and <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
absenteeism, lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> longer term to premature death or poor quality of <strong>the</strong> work<br />
delivered by <strong>the</strong> affected workers.<br />
It is possible to change <strong>in</strong>dividual behaviors and work environments that affect <strong>the</strong> health<br />
and well-be<strong>in</strong>g of workers as <strong>in</strong>dicated by <strong>in</strong>ternational best practices 2 ;<br />
" A 14-year programme of health and fitness of firefighters showed a 16% <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong><br />
physical work capacity. This same programme showed that promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> health fitness<br />
of firefighters is l<strong>in</strong>ked with a decrease <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.<br />
" A 6.5 week exercise programme <strong>for</strong> police (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividual fitness evaluation, daily<br />
exercise supervision and counsel<strong>in</strong>g) showed a 14% decrease <strong>in</strong> total cholesterol, a<br />
22% decrease <strong>in</strong> LDL cholesterol and a 17% decrease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ratio of total cholesterol<br />
to HDL cholesterol.<br />
" A study <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g firefighters to exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> effects of 6 months of flexibility tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidence and severity of jo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>juries showed that <strong>the</strong> group of participants used<br />
less than half as many health care dollars as non-participants.<br />
" An <strong>in</strong>tervention programme <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g a police <strong>for</strong>ce showed that weekly participation<br />
<strong>in</strong> supervised exercise reduced <strong>the</strong> number of sick days by an average of 4.8 days per<br />
person <strong>in</strong> a year follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> start of <strong>the</strong> programme.<br />
