Tak<strong>in</strong>g Action: Build<strong>in</strong>g a foundation <strong>for</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>HIV</strong><br />

On Friday September 8, 2006, over 50 leaders from <strong>the</strong> local and regional tourism <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

came toge<strong>the</strong>r to pledge <strong>the</strong>ir commitment to address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>HIV</strong>/AIDS and <strong>Health</strong> & <strong>Wellness</strong><br />

as part of this DFID Project. The culm<strong>in</strong>ation of this event was <strong>the</strong> development of a pledge<br />

and <strong>the</strong> commitment of 3 additional hotels (approximate 400 employees) to participate <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sub-project design workshops.<br />

From Pledge to Action<br />

SECTION 3: TAKING ACTION – BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR MAINSTREAMING<br />

As a result of <strong>the</strong>ir pledge and <strong>the</strong><br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ed commitment of <strong>the</strong> CEOs,<br />

management and nurs<strong>in</strong>g staff of <strong>the</strong><br />

hotels and restaurants; several focal<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t persons have been identified and<br />

currently operate and staff volunteers<br />

<strong>in</strong> 17 hotels across 9 hotel groups<br />

throughout Barbados.<br />

In addition, support from <strong>in</strong>fluential<br />

project Ambassadors and active<br />

community partners have enabled <strong>the</strong>se hotels, restaurants and <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal tourism<br />

sector operators to actively participate <strong>in</strong> push<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>HIV</strong> with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir tourism and<br />

community-based spheres of <strong>in</strong>fluence!<br />

So Focal po<strong>in</strong>ts and health<br />

and safety officers (or any<br />

staff member who is <strong>in</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to develop a <strong>HIV</strong> workplace<br />

programme) should<br />

remember as <strong>the</strong>y start out<br />

that build<strong>in</strong>g commitment<br />

through <strong>in</strong>itial market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and mobilisation of decision<br />

makers is possible - simply<br />

start with you and your hotel<br />

CEOs and management.<br />
