Your workplace <strong>HIV</strong> and <strong>Wellness</strong> Programme should not be viewed as a sole vehicle <strong>for</strong><br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g health care to employees and health <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation to <strong>the</strong>ir community-based<br />

friends and families. Instead it is best viewed as an extension of <strong>the</strong> community-based<br />

health programmes, ensur<strong>in</strong>g that private public l<strong>in</strong>kages between <strong>the</strong> health services, <strong>the</strong><br />

local communities and <strong>the</strong> tourism private sector is established and <strong>the</strong> strengths of each<br />

partner<strong>in</strong>g unit is taken advantage of.<br />

In o<strong>the</strong>r words <strong>the</strong> workplace programme should not be at one physical workplace location,<br />

but should be a virtual unit that is essentially part of a health service system that promotes<br />

comprehensiveness of care to <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g population <strong>in</strong> ways that:<br />

SECTION 3: TAKING ACTION – BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR MAINSTREAMING<br />

1. Promote access to needed services dur<strong>in</strong>g work<strong>in</strong>g hours while avoid<strong>in</strong>g negative<br />

consequences on productivity that would o<strong>the</strong>rwise result from time lost due to<br />

health seek<strong>in</strong>g<br />

2. Create greater awareness of <strong>the</strong> risk of chronic ill health and <strong>HIV</strong> due to workrelated<br />

factors and empower to reduce <strong>the</strong>ir vulnerabilities and avoid adverse<br />

effects of work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tourism sector through behaviour change<br />

Such l<strong>in</strong>kages /extension <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> community and health sector <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

! Service provision by exist<strong>in</strong>g community nurses<br />

! VCT<br />

! Cl<strong>in</strong>ic sessions and general health checks and referral services<br />

! <strong>Health</strong> promotion services: fitness, nutrition and exercise<br />

! Counsell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Below is a schematic representation of <strong>the</strong> possible private, community and<br />

government l<strong>in</strong>kages between <strong>the</strong> components of a <strong>HIV</strong> and wellness model<br />

driven by <strong>the</strong> tourism sector and community based organisations.<br />
