<strong>University</strong> Card<br />

• <strong>Oxford</strong> <strong>University</strong> identity card<br />

OUCS <strong>Services</strong><br />

• Backbone network, mail, web, UNIX servers<br />

– Your department or College’s network is run by dept/college staff<br />

and we cannot set up a connection to it for you <strong>at</strong> OUCS<br />

• Remote access services (VPN & Eduroam)<br />

• File backup and archive (not available to undergradu<strong>at</strong>es)<br />

Email <strong>at</strong> <strong>Oxford</strong><br />

• Use your <strong>University</strong> account for ALL <strong>University</strong><br />

• Email addresses can be looked up via the web:<br />

• Obey the <strong>University</strong>’s rules for computer use<br />

• DO NOT disclose your password to anyone<br />

• Basic SPAM filtering available through the<br />

– This is set to medium by default, so w<strong>at</strong>ch your Junk<br />

• You get a 2Gb email quota on Nexus


Email Addresses<br />

• All new students and staff have an e-mail<br />

address and account cre<strong>at</strong>ed when their<br />

<strong>University</strong> Card is issued<br />

• <strong>University</strong> email address:<br />

– first.last@coll-or-dept.ox.ac.uk<br />

• Gradu<strong>at</strong>es generally have addresses for<br />

department and college. Normally both go<br />

to the same <strong>Oxford</strong> account but …<br />

• A few departments still run their own email<br />

servers


Reading Email<br />

• Main <strong>University</strong> mail service is called Nexus<br />

• OWA (Outlook Web Access) is the web face of Nexus<br />

• Can read e-mail using an e-mail client<br />

– Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Opera<br />

– need the client installed & configured on your computer<br />

– Configur<strong>at</strong>ion instructions for these and more <strong>at</strong><br />

• Many colleges insist on undergradu<strong>at</strong>es reading email<br />

daily during full term<br />

• If you don’t read your Nexus e-mail regularly please<br />

forward it to an account th<strong>at</strong> you do read regularly

to access OWA (Outlook Web Access)


Webauth/SSO login<br />

• The webauth or SSO (Single Sign-On) login screen is<br />

used for most services other than Nexus

• Login:<br />

– Set, upd<strong>at</strong>e or view Nexus mailbox settings<br />

• SPAM filter settings<br />

• Email forwarding<br />

• Email usage and quota


Connecting to the network<br />

• College or department specifics<br />

• Local connections, run by college or department<br />

– OUCS cannot set up a connection to a College or<br />

Department network for you as we do not run the network<br />

inside the college or department<br />

• You must:<br />

– have anti-virus software installed and kept up to d<strong>at</strong>e<br />

(Sophos is free to all members of the <strong>University</strong>)<br />

– keep your OS upd<strong>at</strong>ed (e.g. Windows Upd<strong>at</strong>e)<br />

• Wireless network connections<br />

– OWL (<strong>Oxford</strong> Wireless LAN)<br />

– Eduroam


Network usage<br />

• Peer-to-peer file sharing (e.g. BitTorrent,<br />

LimeWire) is frowned upon and may be<br />

forbidden by your college or department<br />

• Non-permitted P2P activity may result in<br />

disconnection or a fine or even a visit to the<br />

Proctors<br />

• Skype is ok as long as you set it up as specified<br />

on the OUCS pages:<br />

Remote Access<br />

Remote Access uses a separ<strong>at</strong>e password, NOT your SSO password<br />

• VPN service<br />

– Use for access to <strong>Oxford</strong>-only resources if your computer is not<br />

directly connected to the OU network. e.g. on a commercial<br />

broadband service or via Eduroam (below).<br />

– Needed for OXAM and some other services.<br />

– Also needed to use OWL, the <strong>Oxford</strong> Wireless LAN<br />

• Eduroam service<br />

– An intern<strong>at</strong>ional feder<strong>at</strong>ion of academic institutions which allows<br />

its users to visit other organiz<strong>at</strong>ions and obtain WiFi access<br />

using the same username and password as they would use <strong>at</strong><br />

their home institution.<br />

– NB you may need to use VPN over Eduroam for access to some<br />

services


Personal Web Space<br />

• Each user is allowed 15MB of web space<br />

• Activ<strong>at</strong>e it on https://register.oucs.ox.ac.uk/accman/web<br />

(‘Manage web space’ in OUCS Registr<strong>at</strong>ion login)<br />

• Access using <strong>Oxford</strong> username and password<br />

• Use SCP, SFTP (unsecured FTP is not permitted) to<br />

place files on web space<br />

• Need to use “makeweblinks” command on linux server<br />

for SCP connection<br />

OxFile: Large File<br />

Exchange Service<br />

Sometimes you want to transfer a file to someone but it is<br />

too large to <strong>at</strong>tach to an email or to put into your personal<br />

web space.<br />

OxFile is the <strong>University</strong>’s “DropBox” service<br />

• Visit it on https://oxfile.ox.ac.uk/<br />

• Limits: (file) 25Gb, (folder) 40Gb<br />

• Access using <strong>Oxford</strong> username and password<br />

• Can be used for receiving files as well as for passing<br />

them to others<br />

• D<strong>at</strong>a can be received from/passed to people outside the<br />

<strong>University</strong>


Wh<strong>at</strong> can go wrong?<br />

• Computer virus?<br />

– protect your computer<br />

– software & regular upd<strong>at</strong>es available from OUCS<br />

• Keep machines up to d<strong>at</strong>e!<br />

– Windows Upd<strong>at</strong>e<br />

• Corrupt/lost files? - Take regular backups<br />

• No space for new email? - delete unwanted<br />

messages - w<strong>at</strong>ch for big <strong>at</strong>tachments<br />

• Forgotten password for:<br />

– Nexus/SSO? - reset it using your security question<br />

– College/dept. network? - see College/dept. <strong>IT</strong> Staff

Hardware Breakdown Service<br />

• Useful and cheap breakdown cover for<br />

your desktop, laptop, printer, or iPod<br />

• iPod cover includes accidental damage<br />

• For students registering a computer on<br />

breakdown cover for the first time, there is<br />

a 50% discount. An iPod registered <strong>at</strong> the<br />

same time will also <strong>at</strong>tract a 50% discount<br />
